Ottawa river walleye tips??

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ottawa river walleye tips??

Post by winder »

I am heading up to a friend's cottage on Marshall's Bay (just east of Arnprior) for the weekend. My 6 year old son is on a mission to catch his first walleye. Does anyone have any tips/locations for walleye in this area of the Ottawa river.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Winder

Walleye in the Ottawa

Post by Billy Bones »

Hi Ya Winder

Was out on the Ottawa yesterday, trolled for miles with only a couple small walleye and a sauger. Found a sunken island about 100 yards square about 6 foot of water to the top, full of weeds. Decided to drift over it with my old stand by, drive the pike crazy lure ( silver rattlespot ) Lo and behold I found the Walleye caught 4 in quick succesion from 2 to 4 lbs. Ya never know where they will be holding. Have caught walleye in the Ottawa anywhere from 50 feet to 2 feet this summer, guess that's why they call it fishing and not catching.

Havin Fun

Thanks for the insight Billy.
I sounds like walleye can be pretty elusive.

Our outing last weekend was much less successful.
Because of the weather we didn't get out on the water until Sunday. And only managed a single small rock bass. We had fun catching small mouth from the dock though. We threw back a whole pile of really small (3") fish. For my son quantity beats size most days. A couple of 8-10" fish came in but all in all it was a pretty slow weekend.

Try going up the Mississippi River to the fast water. With your fish finder find the deep water. Be carefull at the mouth of the river. Stay to the right hand side. Also troll worm harness on the way up.
Good luck.
