A quick St. Lawrence River report

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

A quick St. Lawrence River report

Post by DropShotr »

I fished the St Lawrence out of Cardinal on Monday. With a good breeze blowing out of the west, southwest I felt that the river would be a good place to take advantage of the wind, instead of battling it all day on a lake. I started to catch Smallies on the drift. The wind kept the boat just ahead of the line making for relative easy work in keeping bottom contact. I did find that my "lake"dropshot weights had to be bolstered with some split shot. I have since cast some 3/8, 1/2 & 5/8 oz. dropshot weights for the river. With the constant changing bottom of the rock shoal I was on; keeping the presentation as close to vertical as possible really helped reduce hang-ups. Dead sticking 4 & 5in grubs was catching fat & sassy smallies that were onto the crayfish. At the end of my drift I found that 3.2kph seemed to be the speed to troll back to the beginning of the drift spot. Lots of weeds floating freely down the river had me busy keeping lures weed-free. Always nice to be able to catch smallies and walleye in the same area. I never caught a walleye on the grubs, just trolling. Oddly enough I only caught 2 smallies on the troll, with about 18+( I lost count) smallies on the grub. The 2 walleye I caught were almost twins, about 2lb each. Only had to cut each fillet once to fit into the pan Monday night.

Thanks for the informative report DropShot'r. Looking forward to giving that area a go myself in a couple weeks.
