Power ice Auger?
With the colder weather here. Im starting to gear up for the ice fishing season. Im also in the market for a gas powered ice auger. If you were going to purchase a Auger. what would it be? 2hp? 3hp? 8" - 10". I fish using a atv so weight is not the issue. Cost would be issue though. I dont think you need to spend $1000 on a auger?

Cory...I have a Jiffy 3HP 8" auger that's 8yrs old now...It still cuts through the ice like butter..the only thing I have had to change is the spark plug...I strap it down to the back rack on my ATV and it's good to go....
I've pulled a 15lb pike through the 8" hole and still had lots of room left...

I have right now a 3hp jiffy legend(yellow).
it those work great..but i do not need a 3hp a 2 hpower would be plenty anaught.
there some faster auger.
you can save the MOST..4 to 6 seconde on one hole...
.
so you make a cople off hole and save a big 1 min...
.
so faster..for me is not the 1 factor.
its reliable...fast to get parts in case something happen..easy to get blade and not to expensive...
and something i can get localy...for after purchase...warenty etc.
so unles you are so..in a hurry to make hole as fast as possible....jiffy is plenty anaught and there good reliable one.
joco.(there is tons off related subject on some ice fishing site..
)
I did read some bad report about the esquimau brand .
and i would think the normak the best...BUT you can get 2 jiffy and some lures for the same price..

Ya gotta buy a Jiffy! Seriously though, you'll be happy with most any power auger you buy. Strikemaster is generally lighter than the Jiffys but their lower end units contain alot of plastic which is kind of stupid for a canadian winter. If ya have alot of cash laying around pop for a NilsMaster...

Jiffy Ice auger
I have owned the same Jiffy model 30 (white), since 1989. I have had the carb cleaned once, and it still works like new, drilled thousands of holes. The newer Jiffy augers, the yellow series, are set up where a person can not make a lot of ajustments due to the environmental concerns, emissions, fuel, oil, etc. the same thing they have done to the snowmobile. The people who work on them say if you have an old jiffy 30 hold on to it the new models are not worth the money. I had a stikemaster and it really worked good. slower auger speed but cuts like all get out. Problem, all plastic, and hard to work on. Eskimo, cuts ok, but not enough flightings on auger to bring up ice shavings. a person has to be careful the eskimo will screw itself right into the ice and the only recourse is a pipe wrenche turning it backwards or a crow bar to chop it out. No good ice here in North Dakota, yet, can't wait though. Just my 2 cents.

Other than the husqvarna all the ones listed run the same brand of engines ! It's the lightest 10" on the market and, ive been very happy with my purchase and don`t regret spending the extra $ Ive cut prolly 1500-2000 holes now on the original blades! and it still works perfect! I did however pick up some extra blades and an extension from bowzog but never installed them. It always starts and even runs on it`s side so I can lay it down on the ice to let it warm up! You get what you pay for

getnjiggywithit ~ Yah sure is a nice auger you have! I do remember you letting me cut a hole two. But Its just a little to much for me to spend on a auger. I also like the fact that the jiffys are sold almost everywere so if I did need to pick up blades or parts It wouldent be a real problem. Can't wait to hit the ice again with ya bud.
