Your ideas to keep holes from freezing.
Your ideas to keep holes from freezing.
I thought I would start a thread to see what others are doing to keep their ice holes from freezing to quickly.
I have heard alot of diffrent ideas, like 10" or 8" or 6" buckets with 2 inch foam or skirt the sides of the hole with some sort of plastic. Heck I have even heard some people use bubblers.
Any ideas... ?

Hello Priorguy,
What worked for me was taking about a 4x4 inch sqaure of 2-ply cardboard and cutting a slit at each end of it. I then would run the line through the slits on both ends of the cardboard and let the cardboard dangle in the wind with the line fastened at both ends, thus moving the line and preventing it from freezing. This technique also added some action to the line. I still have to strain the hole from time to time though as this technique just slows down the freezing process.
Good luck
cheers,
Dave

If you bring a coleman lantern or heater and run a small 1.5 to 2' piece of 3/8" copper tubing from the heater into the hole the copper tubing will transfer the heat from the source to the hole....just have to watch because the copper will get hot (duh!!) And the tubing is bendy enough to position it where you need it.
Keeping Holes Open
I've heard there are guys from Galetta, Sandy Hook, and the Sand Point area that back their trucks up and put a flexible hose from the exhaust down next to the hole, and keep it running! A few guys get sleepy in their huts, though it might be the beer, rum or rye that makes them feel that way!
Priorguy... the guy I fish with once in awhile covers up the bottom of his shack, and keeps a kettle on the woodstove, and every once in a while pours in some hot water.. Another trick they use is keeping the inside of the shack hot, and they use fans from computers (running off of batteries) and point them towards the hole. Seems to work quite well.
Takes all types pal!
