Coyote Warning in Greely
I just watched the CTV noon news and they are warning residents in the Greely area to watch out for their pets while outside....there have been 20 pets reported missing within the past 2 weeks and 2 known deaths caused by Coyotes...

I hear they have hired trappers and are recommending that everyone secure their garbage. Either build enclosures for the garbage or ensure tight lids.
Tough thing, important animals in the ecosystem, but also damaging to lifestyles.

Their aren't just in Greely. This may be where reports are coming from about missing pets and such but any where on the out skirts of the city have this problem. My brother in-law lives outisde of Metcalfe and he sees them and their tracks all the time in his back yard. As the city expands (i.e. like Barrheaven for example) these animals lose there homes and are force to co-exists with all of us.
If you keep you pet's outside, just know they are part of the food chain and nature may catch up with them.
More importantly educate your kids and let them know these aren't dogs and even if they were, never approach an animal. Heck, even a unfamiliar domesticated dog and there owner should be avoided.

Michael is right that the outskirts of Ottawa has plenty of coyotes, especially south, the coyote footprints I see around kars/kemptville are ridiculous in the winter. I think this is one pack that by some fluke has learned to kill dogs, and will probably keep at it. They usually don't do this though.
