Adding 2 stroke oil to gas tank when outboard has Injection
I heard from a mechanic that if you add a little outboard oil to the normal gas in your tank even if you have an oil-injected motor, that it will prolong the life of the engine!! Is this BS or is it worth the effort. Kinda makes sense but I wonder how bad it will smoke?
I haven't a clue, so i thought i would once again "ask the experts".
Maybe JP or Micropterus have some info or can clear it up?
Well what else am I going to do! There's no ice here in London area...I'm bored stiff!
Thanks,
FT

Hi Fish'n Tech. As for your question. Well I know of people that owned the OMC OB's, with VRO injection used to do this just in case their VRO pump failed. This was the shortcoming of large OMC OB's. Adding TCW3 oil to your main tank will help in this case, but will fowl your plugs more often and yes there will be a little bit more smoke. I don't know what brand of engine you have, but it will prolong the life of your engine if the injection pump fails. Just my two cents.

No need to pre mix gas and oil with these Merc engines. As Hawgbass said some early OMC OB's, with VRO injection used to do this just in case their VRO pump failed but nothing to be worried about with a Merc.
You run the risk of fouling plugs and gumming up your engine if you pre mix as well as use the oil injection system.
Cheers

I agree, just make sure you use top quality oil all the time! change the plugs once a year (even if you think they dont need them) get the motor winterized "PROPERLY" by your marine mechanic, always use fresh premium gas and your motor will last as long as it was destined to.JP wrote:No need to pre mix gas and oil with these Merc engines. ohhhh the horrror

It was NORMAL break-in procedure to add oil to the gas or run extra oil of all outboards to ensure PROPER BREAK-IN...
Now that had been blown out of proportion by a few chicken little's and the disseminators of disinformation......
If have seen just as many failures in all motors and when the failure is not understood the misinformation runs rampant.,,
A PROPERLY MAINTAINED engine will run PROPERLY WHEN MAINTAINED.....I don't care the brand
The were some large black engines out there which broke drive gears for their mechanical oil pump and the motor let the owner know by the engine failing... Then they put a sensor on it but that caused some problems as well until finally they just said if it blows it blows,,
Which is your case Your motor has a gear driven oil pump, probably Mikuni, still and no sensor to tell anybody the pump has stopped moving.
Now the worm gear is steel instead of plastic now I believe and I have only seen one in 1000 lose a pump so that's the same game they all play..
Failures in this industry are still acceptable..
I would be more concerned that the pump is adjusted properly and the sensor for the oil level in the tank works properly..... those are your only safe guards....
JP I had a OPTI that had 18 SEPARATE warranty claims before it was sold and 2 after and over the next 3 seasons went through 4 TPS's at $160 a pop.... Is that one warranty claim or not????????????

If the shop knows what they are doing they will have a schedule for sevice not just BRING IT IN FOR A TUNE-UP, many
