Ottawa riv. regs

Hey guys, what do you think of the new walleye regs for the Ottawa Riv. 5 walleyes but only 1 over 15.8 " from Mar 1 to June 15.

I think it makes alot of sense. This is when the big females are getting ready to spawn and are most likely to bite. They need alot of energy for the spawn so they put the feed bag on good.

I don't see where it says that you are allowed 1. It is"none" over 15.8" in Zone 12 from Mar1 to Jun 15.

And I am all for it. We have been catching a lot of smaller walleyes in the past couple of years and this will be even better for the walleye fisheries. If theyhave this regulation for the next 5-6 years i am sure that we will see some very nice sized walleyes being caught.

And I would support that also if they want to impose this regulation all season long. Myself I would rather fry up a 14" walleye than an 18" one.

Boogie....maybe i missed something but if i look at the regs online for zone 12 (ontario portion of the Ottawa River) your not even allowed one over 15.8, it says quote:must be less than 15.8 inches from March 1 st to JUne 15 th.

Now this is about different areas then the Ottawa but I have always been told that we need to release the large fish as they reproduce better than the smaller ones yet on Clayton Lake they say that Walleye must be greater than 16.1"...Is this not going to hurt the more mature spawning fish??? Should we not be keeping only the smaller ones and letting the larger ones grow the population?? Or am I very confused here

I agree with WB...
smaller fish are better eating, and the large ones should be left to spawn. Just look at Lake clear, or Centennial, where an 'eye has to be 19.7" inches to keep; You catch a boatload of 18" fish, yet go home with nothing for the fryer. It seems to me that this aproach makes the most sense. Keep a few small ones to eat, leave the biggies to replenish the stock!

My take on that Almontefisher is that instead of closing walleye on Clayton they just put in a minimum size therefore creating some kind of slot limit because only one over 18.1" So the slot is pretty small. I guess the 16"to 18" are not the best spawners

I don't see how this is going to make any difference. The majority of walleye fishermen I see out there keep everything they catch and a lot fish with extra rods. They know they will never see a CO so no mater what the regs are it's not going to change until the CO's acknowledge that the Ottawa river exist.

This isn't a thread about the shortage of CO's...! And I find it hard to believe that the "majority" of fishermen ignore the regs. R.C.
The regulations are followed by the majority in my view. Certainly some people will disregard the rules, but again, that is not the topic of this thread. Furthermore, I have seen Conservation Officers on the Ottawa River, although I admit it would be encouraging to see them more frequently. Remember, true ethical standards are achieved by how we behave when no one is watching.

It's not about CO's it's about regs that have no meaning as the majority just don't care. I spend over 100 days a year on the O and I'll be lucky if I see a (1) walleye released. Don't tell me those guys out there in freezing weather all day in November only get one limit.

I'm out there 100 days a year, been guiding for 8 years and all the years prior so well over 1000 days x 10 hours average or 10000 hours and yet to see a CO.

The regs only work for the minority that follow them, sorry but it's a hard fact that we don't have CO's and guys just want to fill their freezers.

hi do agree.

a lot of fisherman over there just dont care about.the reg..at all.

seen some musky kpth and they were not in the reg lenght.

saw some people fishing walleye at victoria out off season.and cant wait to see them again this year out off season and out off legal size(will have a cell phone by hand..

just to bad.they just dont guive a?%$? about other people or reg.

it would be easy for the mnr to catch them.but for this you need more mnr people.and they dont have the budget for more off them.....

You're right Ben, my mistake. Are you or Pierre still having your tournaments ? I'm having mine at the same time of last year, May 10th, again at Cornwall's Marina 200.
