Ottawa riv. regs

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I am ok in principle with the size and limits but, the MNR really need to conduct more studies on the river systems that they impose regulations on.

How is it that they decide on 15.8 and not say 15.5 or something like that. If you ask me they don't study enough nor do they look at historical data.

I have to disagree with Trophy on a few of his comments. I fish for walleye in the spring and sometimes in the summer and I kept a grand total of 3 walleye for the table. I see alot of people who throw back smaller ones and I try to encourage people to let the big ones go if I see them with a HAWG. I do agree with him on the enforcement end of things though. I have spent hundreds of days on the Ottawa River and only been stopeed once by an Ontario CO. I have been stopped multiple times by the Quebec CO's and the OPP. I hope these guys step up the enforcement of the new regs because I think if they are followed that the Ottawa could be a great fishery with some real trophies to be had.

Only time I have been approached by a CO was two years ago under a bridge just outside of Middleville. Out of nowhere they came, snuck up on me and scared the bejeebers out of me. They laughed pretty hard, asked to see my license, ask me if I have had any beers cause my car was parked just down the road, if I had any luck and what I had caught and then they left. 28 years of fishing and once I have seen them. Now I usually fish not so fished waters so I would have thought on the Ottawa you would be seeing them a lot but it does not sound like that

We see them every second night when we fish for Cats at Victoria Island.. It's usually the CO's from NCC that check us there. I guess the federal government don't mind spending some money on the conservation.

The last 3 trips to the Bay of Quinte this fall we were checked out by MNR and OPP, both on the water and on land. They really enforce down there and it is good to see. I also got stopped just to the side of Chats dam by a french MNR officer in a little 14 foot tinny with a 9.9 on it. He just snuck up on us, we thought at first he was going to fish right next to us. He did not speak a word of english. He headed for another guy but the guy would just speed up enough to stay out of his reach and then he took off.
