Non-Fishing: Ideas for a broken key in a lock

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Non-Fishing: Ideas for a broken key in a lock

Post by Splake_Hunter »

Hey everyone, sorry, a non-fishing post. But I though some of you could give me some ideas on how to get a damn broken key out of my front door lock.

The key was broken flush with the lock, but trying to get it out tonight with various objects (tweasers, pliers, paperclips, jig saw blade), I pushed it in further, AWESOME!!

Anyways, any ideas on how to get this sucker out would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would spray it with WD-40 to lube it up and then put a small dab of crazy glue, the instant stuff, on part of the key you still have and hopefully that it glues together enough for you to take the broken piece out or enough for you to grab it with pliers. Just make sure you don't put to much glue so that it glues the entire lock.

And I found this,

Good luck

And this could be a fishing post, you could have broken the key to your tackle box.

If you use crazy glue I wouldn't use WD-40.

like wallyboss said...........no wad40 if you want to use crazy glue.because it will mix and not stick.

call a locksmith. .expensive.

try again.twiswer.long nose realy sharp....

but why its is broke..........wrong keys.if its the case wrong keys migh be harder to take out.

is there a way you can tka all the door knub out off there and work on a table.or bring to a locksmith store..better price.

heres the best way and most successfull way of doing it!!

spray wd/40 in the lock

take a 1/32 metal bit drill a mini pilot whole in the key that is stuck in the lock!!

go half way thru then take the bit out and off of the drill

put sone crazy glue on the 1/32 bit and stick it in the pilot whole!

wait wait wait.... then take some pliers and pull on the bit!

hope for the best!

Hey guys, I have done this before with a strong magnet twice. I was able to pull the shaft of the key out by holding the magnet over the lock. I also did it once on my car with a pair if twizzers but part of the key was sticking out of the lock.

Let us know haw you do.
Good luck Dave

I agree with Joco. 24/7's idea is the easiest. Drill below surface then dab a drop of crazy glue...wa.........................it. Then pull it out.

Can't you disasseble the lock from the inside? You don't need to be a locksmith to do that. I'm assuming you have access to the building's inside. Just disassemble the lock, poke out the key and reinsert. Simple, don't even try that drill thing!

I did the same thing this summer. My solution eventually required the locksmith. The rest of my efforts were just time well spent justifying the locksmith :D ...

I did find these and was tempted but the locksmith was still faster.

Take the lock set off, through it out, and go to Home Depot and get a new one. :)

Drill a 2inch hole in the door---place TNT---run fast-----the building can now be entered thru the huge new opening. THIS ALWAYS WORKS

I had this problem a month ago when my snowmachine key boke off in the ignition, i tried everything including crazy glue (not a good idea if it glues the broken part into lock), nothing worked. Tweasers were too big, they couldn't fit in far enough, I tried paper clips but they weren't strong enough. For the sled, it might have been a bit easier, I just took the ignition out and worked on it inside but the secret to getting it out was a fish hook. I had been tying flies waiting for winter to return and it dawned on me. I took a #6 hook which is stong enough not to bend but small enough to slide in between the key and the lock. I clipped the barb and most of the hook off so it had only a small lip (hook part) right at the end to slide down passed the key and push up against it to grab hold. Then I used pliers and yanked about three times and out it came. It worked extremely well so it might for you.

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the posts, I got the key out today!! Actually it was alot easier than I first thought. I took the lock off the front door, took it apart, sprayed it with some WD, tried digging it out with tweasers again, that didn't work, but I gave it a couple of ggod shakes and the key actually slid out of the hole just enough to grab with pliers, SWEET!

THanks again for all the ideas.
