Foolishness
Every year, the same thing happens, trucks, cars , whatever going through the ice... why risk it! Yeah, the ice is good in spots if you test it, but maybe 20 feet away its not! What's the point of risking it? Are you that lazy?? Are you?? Can't walk a km or 2???
.
IF the area you are fishing is sheltered and known for consistent ice and has been tested hey I will drive my lazy but out. If i dont know the conditions i will not risk it.
For the guys who just have a rod and bucket to carry on the ice this is not to bad of a walk.
Myself:
clam junior
vex
mr heater
extra propane
minnows
stool
lantern
gas auger.
Not to mention the 30lbs of extra clothing I am wearing. I rather drive if safe. not because I am lazy but because i am not superhuman.

Not to make fun of you but I seriously think you need to re-assess how you view the amount of gear you are bringing out with you. The list you just provided is hardly anything at all... how much can all that 'gear' really weigh? If you you're finding it hard to to tow a clam jr. with minnows, stool, auger, heater out, you need to hit the gym. For your health, its really not much to tow out at all.

i don't think you understand how much certain things weigh. the clam is about 45 pounds, the gas auger....uhm lets say 25 pounds (i dont have one so its a guess), propane 7 pounds for both, vex with battery another 5 pounds, minnows, mr heater, stool, lantern, and food and brevrages. so you're looking at just under 100 pounds of gear.
i own a clam as well so i know exactly what seabass is talking about. now if the ice has no snow on it then the clam will glide with all of the gear on top, no problem. but you can certainly work up a sweat towing all that gear to a spot, wich could be further then 1-2kms. in a foot and a half or more of snow. just to let you know "guy" that working up a sweat before ice fishing can make for a cold day. you know bad for your health(hypothermia).

so if the ice is thick enough i'll drive my stuff rather then hike to it. i keep the hike for those little trout lakes.

do you own a clam and all that gear, most likely not. so you don't know how a clam plowes through the snow.
so everybody who is driving on the ice needs a gym membership?? well buddy lets go to petrie and start spreading the news.
now if people want to drive onto the ice, well it's their decision. not yours.
thanks for the health tip Mom.

Well, yeah, its their decision but it's just pointless. Especially at Petrie. And I've pulled a clam before, it's not hard. Not hard at all.
You say 'all that gear'?
that was nothing! minnows, stool, auger, fishing stuff, that's not much... really.
Anyways, this is a go nowhere argument, some people are lazy, some people aren't, glass full/glass empty? Same thing. Especially at Petrie!
