Recommendations for inexpensive outboard repairs

Post by Poppadiesel »

Bought an 89 Johnson 15 h.p. with low compression in one cylinder. Removed head and found bits of piston ring on top. Cylinder wall seems OK. I'm guessing I'll need a new piston and rings. If I can't manage the repairs, any recommendations for an individual or shop that is reasonable? One shop wanted $1000; another, at $85/hr would soon be there too. Or, has anyone changed a piston before and is the shop manual--on order--detailed enough? Lots of experience with shady tree car repairs, but very limited experience with outboards.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Mike....I'm new to this site and fiberglass boating.... I have for years used a 15hp Evinrude and 14ft aluminum to fish with but recently bough an old Bayliner with an 85 force on it ( I know I know)....just for some fun with the wife and dog. I'd like a tune up and impeller replacement....I'm reading you are the Man....What would I be looking at finacially to have this done ?
Thanks Dave...

:D Sorry for the delay didn't see the post.

I don't like to give estimates before I seeing the motor and having said that if all it needs is an impellor and some plugs and going over etc then it will not be expensive

Bring it by in the spring and I will give you a better value after seeing it.
