Fly Fishing in Tribs?

Post by Carl »

Anyone in Ontario fly fish for salmon and steelhead in Ontario tribs?

I know it`s a big thing in QC but I never really hear about folks fly fishing for them in Ontario.

Anyone folks fly fish for them?

Carlco,

If you're serious about fishing for steelhead consider a trip down to PA to fish the Erie tribs. Considered by many to be the best steelheading in North America. A group from the Ottawa flyfishers society is currently down there. The group that went in the fall had one angler exceed 100 hookups in one day. And yes the fishing can be that good. Timing is everything.

For Salmon I would suggest heading down to NY to fish the Salmon R. Definitely better and closer than Port Hope.

Cheers,
Todd

In addition to the Salmon River in New York, check out some of the other tributaries nearby: Oswego River, Black River, and The Sandy Creeks (North, South, Little).

I am writing to seek clarification: As between the Salmon River (Pulaski NY) and the Ganaraska River (Port Hope Ont.) for steelhead in the Spring -- and only considering the Spring -- what is the better opportunity?

I understood that, in the Spring, the Garanaraska (Port Hope Ont.) is better. I thought that was the general agreement in a thread about a month ago.

Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe there was a difference of opinion in whatever thread that was.

I cannot speak from experience. After a few long drives and a couple of semi-legitimate attempts to date, I would like still to catch my first steelhead some time.

What I really wanted to do today was to catch my first trout of the season on opening day in Upstate New York. I managed that last year on a branch of the Great Chazy River. (It was not so great where I was. It could be readily crossed with a running broad jump). However, this year I considered the weather and opted to stay in town for the OFFS meeting about Algonquin Park. It would have been good to see Ganman's presentation about NNY in Kingston last night, but-no-could do.

Maybe somebody else can start a thread about his fantastic success on opening day in NNY.
