Fenwick rod @ Canadian Tire??

Does anyone know anything about the Fenwick spinning rod that Canadian Tire has on sale this weekend? The model is Highlander II and it's a 6'6 medium. I can't seem to find any other specs on it. Might be a decent backup rod for $39.99.

I picked up a couple shimano rod/reel combos from Costco last weekend. Not at all pro-tourny rod/reels but the price is great at $50.00. They still have a bunch at the Kanata store.

Rod is a Shimano Stimula 6',6" Medium-Fast
Spinning Reel is a Shimano Sienna 2500FB

Rod retails at $50
Reel retails at $80

I have found the combo on ebay for $50-60 but then you have to add in shipping - $20. I hope they last a while but the price is right for some extra rod/reels.

Canadian Tire also has the Abu Garcia C502ALB spinning reel on sale for $39.99 (It's $65 at Lebaron). It might make a nice combo with the fenwick rod.

It's a medium-action so that's good... the most sensible rod you can get. Its all you need. And you don't need to get an expensive medim-action either... anything above $50 is too much... not many benefits. Just get one medium-action and you're good to go... for everything around here. Maybe get a heavier rod on sale for trolling but that's it... no need to waste your money on buying lots of rods when one medium will do the job!

Man Joe you are such an expert on everything. Why not start your own site offering advice on fishing? Better yet at TV show, maybe call it " JOE KNOWS ". Must be nice to know everything.

I used to buy any rod for fishing but have learned over the past few years that certain rods are needed for certain situations and types of fishing.

Sorry for going off topic but tongue has been held long enough and I am having a bad day.

That's a great deal but I think the 502 series is rated for ultra light fishing so the medium action rod may be a little too much unless that's what you're looking for?

it's not an Ultra-Light reel from a performance perspective. It's ultra-light in weight. This review from tackle tour sums it up nicely http://www.tackletour.com/reviewabugarc ... 02alb.html
They say that it would be good for bass fishing, Steelhead, Stripers, Redfish, and even some inshore species. Sounds good enough for me.

I picked up the combo today. I think it will be a good setup for some crankbaits, etc. The rod has softer tip than some of my other medium rods .

I have been looking all day to find out about this rod. I can't find any info on it any where, even on the fenwick web site. or the local tackle shop that sells fenwick has never heard of the highlander. The reason for looking so hard is, I was going to buy the eagle gt for $59.99, but this highlander is a $79.99 on sale for $39.99. Is it only made for Candaian tire? and is it a better rod then the eagle gt? both are the same action and size Iam looking for. please if any one knows any thing about this rod please let me know thanks.

My guess is it is specifically made for CT, there's alot of things made specifically for them, I know their hockey skates for example are, as well as some of their baitcasters, don't know for sure but that would be my guess.

thanks good to know. What do you think is the better rod? Is the highlander a cheap made rod for canadian tire? I work in a auto factory that makes parts for Ford and GM, also aftermarket for canadian tire, and other. The quality standard for canadian tire is so bad. not kocking c.t. because I still shop there. I just dont want to buy the wrong rod. what do you think.

I sent a message to Fenwick on Friday asking about this rod and if it is equivalent to one of their other models. I will post the info as soon as I get a response. I hope I get it this week (before the sale ends).

For trolling your want an extra fast tip with a strong butt section. If you are talking medium action ( every rod design is different as a medium action muskie rod is very different than a medium action pan fish rod), I would recommend a light action for trolling. Trolling rods are one of the most advanced tapers on the market as the tip has to be extremely fast so you can see a crank-bait wiggle 200 feet behind the boat, but at the same time have a butt section that can land and handle a monster when you get it to the boat while moving 2 mph. Also a good trolling rod should be around 8 feet in length so you can get leverage and control on the fish when fighting them from great distances that are common in trolling situations.
