walleyes are running

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

walleyes are running

Post by boogie »

The walleye run started last night on Hooples Creek in Ingleside. We were there last night as part of the Lunker Club, some of the natives were there also spearing. We asked them to try and spear the males only, nothing else we could do. The ministry will be there Saturday night collecting eggs and spawn for one of the hatchery.

I think the natives do it just becuse they can and like to make a point, but are they takes large numbers? If not I wouldn't get upset. Isn't the spawning bed on private property, can spearing be carried out there?

I have seen just as bad ice fishing on the St.Lawrence. There is a spot where it is possible to catch literally 100 walleye a day and some were. The CO's and OPP moved in to shut the poachers down but they started bring kids and seniors to continue the spree.

Don't think the Natives are the only ones abusing the system guys.

brian...I have not deleted ANY post of someones opinion that didn't include a suggestion to commit a CRIME. There is no exception to that...if anyone makes suggestions of that sort i will delete it, and the possibility of their account being suspended defintely exists.

If i choose to offer my opinion on a subject, have no worries, I will. But it will be just THAT, my opinion, and it would not suggest to people that they do something illegal as the post i DID delete did.

If you want to discuss this more, by all means send me a PM and I'll be happy to discuss why the post was deleted :)

Cheers

Just to chime in...

Ok, allow the spearfishing...yep...ALLOW it...BUT: the natives should have to be using hand made spears...nothing they picked up at cdn tire or anything else...a sharpened stick or a sharp piece of stone on the end tied on with vines NO ROPE, NO STRING...only what the forefathers would have used.

this is a good topic. here on da reedooo I can say that in 2005 natives were taking lots of fish but trying to avoid big females. 2006, where are the big females? 2007, can't say. 2008. Just no fish. Where once we saw hundreds, this year with the weird weather we are seeing 5. Seriously, five or six fish is the max we have recorded.
It can't be about us and them. it's about the fishery. If yer upset about local poaching or native harvest get involved. Talk to land owners about restricting access. Show up with your family and stand in front of the best harvesting spots. Talk to the mnr and get a dialogue going about conservation.
hey bardern, can you pm about the spot on the larry where i can ice fish a limit :D
great post boogie man

I absolutely agree with this statement. The spearing will happen no matter how much opposition there is but if they did like their forefathers then it would even the playing field.
I remember when the Napanee river was opened up for spearing. There was a big event where the elders pulled the eggs from the females and fertilized them. They stirred them with I think an eagles feather so as not to damage them. I thought that was an awesome idea. I guess it was just for publicity because to my knowledge it was done only that year.
With the higher than normal and faster flowing water this year I would think it'd be a lot tougher to stand in the current. That might be a plus for the fish.
Here's hoping for a good spawn!!

I could be wrong, but I thought Natives were now only allowed to carry out these types of harvests on reservations, not on public land...again, I could be wrong about this.
