50:1 mixture

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to confirm something...this is my first 2 stroke and the mixture call for 50:1 so does that me that for every litre of gas I should be adding 50 ML of oil?. If so would that mean that one litre of oil is good for 20 litres of gas?. I just want to make sure that I don't run the engine to lean so any advice would be appreciated.

For the older outboards it means that 25L of gas you mix 500ml of oil.

I have the 30 HP Johnson you sold me..haha...long day at work??.

So it's 25 litres of gas to half a litre of oil?. How does that work out to 50:1?. Good thing I posted.

My 50 H.P. Merc. is the same mix ratio. It's a little tough gettin' 25 litres o' gas into one o' those 5 gallon plastic (or metal) outboard tanks (I assume that's what yer usin') so the best thing to do is to mix 400 ml. of 2 stroke oil with 20 litres of gas and yer good 2 go!!!!

50 litres of gas to 1 litre of oil = 50:1
25 litres of gas to 1/2 litre of oil = the same 50:1
20 litres of gas to 400 ml of oil = the same 50:1

1 Litre equals 1000 ml. Divide 1000 by 50 and you will have the the answer per litre. Works out to 20 ml. of oil per litre of gas, for a 50/1 ratio. By the same token if your engine calls for 25 to 1 it would be 40 ml. of oil per litre of gas. Carry a measuring cup and when you fill up and you will know exactly how much oil to add to your tank, no matter how much fuel is still in the tank. Hope this helps. Use good oil, not the Canadian Tire stuff.

I always use a quality oil as you mentioned however when I had skidoo's I would always add a "little" bit more oil. For example if it's 500ml for 25 litres I would use 500ML but only at 24.5 litres of fuel just to ensure that I didn't run it lean. Would this be good idea for a boat motot (2stroke) or should I do exactly 50:1?.

Hello gonefishin

I got the idea that the engineers that made Johnson/Evinrude, Merc, or any Ski-Doo motor know a little more than I. Therefore follow their advice. A little extra oil is not going to hurt, if it gives you peace of mind. It will just foul your plugs and make your motor smoke a little more.

The trick I use to rememeber;
amount of fuel in L, double it and add a 0 and thats how much oil you need in ML.

Most motor manual suggest not adding more oil than needed. The extra is already calculated in.

Thanks again everyone, I have decided to add exactly what is needed as it would seem that this would already be a calcualted safety factoe (as several people have mentioned already). Otherwise the 2 stroke just smokes to much!!.
