Float tube fins???

Post by Evan »

I finally bought a float tube- fish cat made by Outcast, now i need a pair of fins, does anyone have any recommendations as far as best for the price?
I'll be needing them to fit over my wader boots as I've read that just on the stocking foot alone will wear the waders faster.

Evan,

Nice new toy!

While over the boot fins are good, I find the stocking foot fins far superior in terms of thrust. To protect your neoprene stocking foot waders, get a pair of MEC paddling booties (about $40) to put on over the neoprene feet. I've been doing this for about 10 years without problems.

Good job Evan!

I do the booties-over-the-stocking-foot as well. What Fishboy says about more thrust is very true and that extra thrust comes in very handy when the wind starts blowing.

Fins

Post by JVE »

I am using a pair of driver fins I purchased at the Dive Shop located at the Home Hardware shop at Wellington & Holland - the lowest price will be around $80 but they really work very well. I picked up a pair of cheap booties that you can get at any sporting store. Bring in your booties and simply get a pair of fins that fit.

Evan,

Keep in mind that the paddling boots that you pick up should be 2 sizes larger than the size of your stocking foot wader booties. I would suggest that that you bring your waders along with you to purchase the paddling boots. Also, you'll find that when the boots and waders are dry it can be difficult getting the boots over the stocking feet, though it's a lot easier when both are wet.

When your talking about paddling boots, do you mean the shoes or boots? the ones that are like a hight top or ankle cut?

The neoprene ones with the rubber sole. Some of the guys like the slip on low cut ones, I prefer the high cut, side zip up type. MEC has both styles for ~$15.

does anyone have a make or model to suggest? I've tried a couple different fins, though- no luck, even 2 off the dive shops i checked didn't have ones that fit well. though i do think the booties idea is great.

I have an XL pair of Cressi Frogs to go over my size 12 stocking foots and water shoe. They were the most comfortable fit and these fins move a lot of water with very little effort. I got them at Diver's Warehouse on Hunt Club Rd near Merivale. They were around $125.

Evan,

I picked up pair of Creek Company fins from LeBaron last season for $55. I find them just a little tight, but then again I'm wearing size 11 stocking feet waders with a size 13 paddling boot.
