Fishing in West-Ontario ~ Thunder Bay area - "locations

Im moving to Thunder bay in September and I'd like some info on general fishing in that area - Good fishing spots, lakes or rivers, species, and fishing equipment (tackle/bait stores).

I lived in Tbay for 22 years and moved to Ottawa 7 years ago. I'm actually in Tbay right now for my brothers' wedding.

Lac Des Mille Lacs is a great lake for smaller "eater" walleyes.

There are literally hundreds of lakes that hold great fishing around here. Also the Nipigon River is awesome in the fall for trophy salmon and rainbow fishing just below the Alexander Dam.

Living in the area will get you access to some of the best fishing in the world in its own right... it's a great area.

Ice fishing is also really good here and there is no shortage of spots to get tackle, advice, and the local low-down.

Im moving to Thunder bay in September for the aviation course at confederation. Next year we do Float training, and we might even have a bit of time for some fishing at some remote lake in the area, - thats why I wanted to know.

** What about tackle and fishing equipment ?
Do they have any big fishing/hunting stores like "Le Baron" here in Ottawa? - If fishing gear more or less expensive in West ontario, then in ottawa?

As far as stores go, there are plenty of stores in the area to get your supplies at. Really close to Confederation College is Riverside Outdoors, and that just so happens to be 1/2 a block from where I grew up. If you're looking for a bigger store with more selection, "D&R Sports" is on Memorial Ave in the main business district.

There are lots of bait shops around, depending on what direction you are heading to fish on any given day. You'd be best served by just asking around and also checking out the local fishing forums, etc.

Hey, look at that! I just noticed that Riverside Outdoors, which I mentioned in my last post as being 1/2 a block from where I grew up (quite literally 1/2 a block!), is a registered retailer here on Fish Hawk!
