My buddy called me last night to tell me that he too bought a new Lowrance H2Oc and said that he now wished he had a university degree so he could figure out how to work the unit and the S/W....he bought the card that has the 12000 lakes on it within Canada and was out on the Ottawa R and can't get it to show his location...he's seriously considering taking it back to Le Barons....
I wonder if Garmin's GPS' (60CSX or 76CSX) are more user friendly???

If your buddy had a university degree, he would be so far in debt or
unemployeed ,he probably couldn't afford the Gps to begin with

The interface may seem confusing at first, but once you use any Lowrance GPS or Sonar the menus all work the same as using Microsoft Windows, which actually will make it easy over the years that you use the products. I use the LCX Sonar/GPS and GlobalMap units and navigate the same way to load mapping data.
First select advanced mode from the menu if your H2O is not in that mode.
1. Press Menu Button
2. Cursor Down to Map Data... -> press ENT
3. Cursor Down to Map Choice -> press ENT
3. Cursor down to map you would like to select -> press ENT
4. Selected map will show in pull down box -> press EXIT, EXIT to return to main map window.
Note: For Navionics charts you need to read the map selection list provided in the documentation or contact them for a detailed list as they often provide them in chart number format.
The reason the maps do not load automatically is many user have multiple mapping data for single bodies of water or geographical areas and the unit would not know which map to select. As an example I have 4 different maps of Mississippi Lake and select the one I want to use in different areas or when running across the lake.
enjoy...

Here is some on-line content:

Look for this question:
What do all the Code #'s mean when selecting a map on my HotMaps chip?
I know this is different from yours, but there should be a similar answer for your exact chip. You may need to change things around if you fish elsewhere, or if something happens to your config settings.

I have the same unit. I bought the assoc. software - Lowrance Map Create 6 at LeBaron's. It allows you to customize the maps you want to load, then you use the supplied MMC card reader to write onto an SD memory card. The memory card is then loaded under the battery compartment at the back and viola.
