Power tilt problem.

Post by Wallyboss »

I have a problem with the power trim on my 75hp 4 stroke Merc. I tilt the motor up and after a while I turn around and see that the motor has dropped back down. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. But could it be as easy as checking the fluid in the reservoir and topping it up?? Or could it be something more than that.

Dan....sounds like a low fluid level or bad seal!!

I found this article that may be related to your problem!!....

Hydraulic—fluid from the electric pump is routed via lines and check valves to the actuator ram. Check the fluid level in the system and look for any leaks. Low fluid or loss of fluid is common, and indicates a leaking system. (Hydraulic fluid does not evaporate!) The reservoir must have fluid and all lines must be free from air. Generally these systems will self-bleed any entrapped air if they are operated over the complete range of motion a few times with the fill cap open. Check your engine owner's manual or repair manual for details. Hydraulic fluid is extraordinarily low viscosity and will leak at the slightest opportunity. The actuator ram seals may be leaking. Check for any fluid in that area. Check all hose connections for tightness. Generally it is not possible to make repair to leaking seals in the internals of the pump, check valves, or ram while the engine is on the transom. After bleeding, if the ram moves but cannot hold a load, there is either a leak or a bad check valve. Sometimes a seal will swell and work better if the system has full fluid level.

Hope it helps....

Dan,

Does it do it with the motor turned off or while under power? Once you throttle up past a predetermined RPM the motor automatically trims down as a safety feature.

If you trim it up to a trailering point and it slowly trims down over time with the engine off, you will need to get the hydrolic trim and tilt system checked on the motor.

It does it when turned off. It is sitting in my driveway and I lift it just to let the transom saver drop and then I leave it and it takes about 5 minutes and it ends up all the way down.

I checked for leaks and there doesn't seem to be any.

Sounds like a faulty ram , its leaking fluid internally

If it was low in fluid it wouldn't go up as high as it normally does

Take it back for warranty, its a fairly new unit isn't it????????

as everyone said it's probably the hydraulic fluid leaking out...since that is what lifts it up...

good luck :)

Hey Dan what about this option. You know the little white plastic screw on the side to lower it if it fails. Maybe it is slithly open. Just a thought. Happened to me before

Haven't had a chance to get it looked at. But I have tried all do it yourself options that you guys talked about but to no avail. Thanks for all the tips .

I have heard that the most often found issue that causes this is dirty hydraulics fluid. I'll start with replacing it .
