An afternoon on the Rideau River

My GF & I went to the Rideau at the stretch that runs past Strathcona Park. The rapids are very easy to wade even if the water is a little higher than normal. My GF is a novice to fly fishing (only her 2nd time out), but she's already miles ahead of where I was when I started out.

We fished above the rapids for about 2 hours and only had one smallie to show for our efforts, so we took a nap in the park. Later, we fished in the rapids themselves and managed a couple more smallies before packing it in. It was good to get out together on such a nice afternoon. While it was fairly hot, there was a refreshing, and sometimes gusting, breeze that helped to cool us off.

It's been many years since I last fished this area. I'd like to return to fish the deeper water above the rapids as there are lots of reeds and weeds along the shoreline that look promising. The water below the rapids looks pretty good, too.

sounds awesome. i live fairly close by to there so if you head down and want a partner, give me a call and i can meet you there.

i picked up a nice LM bass in the canal yesterday about 2lbs or so. huge pain in the butt to get the fish up through the railing though.

She's actually fishing now?

Getting primed for those mountain rivers are you?

As for Strathcona park, fish the the bottom section as far down as you can wade. I find the middle towards the east side to be the best. They've been feeding on minnows. Simply swinging your flies or letting them dangle downstream has been successful.

It's incredible, Todd! She went wet wading without problems and she kind of likes the whole fishing thing. As well, she's researching websites without my asking. There's an awful lot of interest in flyfishing in Japan. I've already bookmarked about 30 sites. In the future, I might look into bringing groups to Japan to fish their local trout species. You think any our OFS members would be interested?

Now did you pick her up a pair of waders or did you just wet wade?

Nice report......The Rideau is a wonderful river.......

I still have yet to try flyfishing but may get into it someday......

I always find that on the Rideau I always catch the most right below rapids as soon as they end right where it's almost still but still has a big current.

I find I catch more when using really light baits, or worms because they just float around in the current naturally.......

Never fished Strathcona park....it looks like a nice stretch of water though..

Very fishy indeed....
