Hi all,

New to posting on the forums, but have been lurking for a while. I'm heading out on Saturday morning (Aug 2) to the Prince of Wales/Barnsdale location (the little park's name escapes me at the moment) around 07:00-07:30.

If anyone else wants to come out and join in the fun, would be nice to meet some of the posters from the forum.

I'm looking for someplace to fish on Sat. morning, so maybe I'll see you there. I don't know the area very well, but a search on Google Maps shows Long Island Park at the end of Barnsdale. Is that the place?

If so, I'll see you there.

Just take Barnsdale east. After you cross the river, just hang a left into the park.

That's exactly the place...over the bridge on Barnsdale, turn left immediately after and into the little park. I'll be the guy in waders

This link has a "Drive to" location set to the parking lot for the spot Jean is talking about. Just click it, on the left side fill in your home address and press go-baby-go...

It's dead simple to get to. We (Jean and I) were there last Sat am for the first time ever. Caught numerous fish under the .5 lb mark (6 to 9 inches) way too numerous... hooked up with 2 or there good sized ones, 1-3lbs, but fish always feel bigger when they are jumping and tail walking, especially the ones that get away...

Patterns of choice for me were;

Marabou Muddler - Natural and White Deer Hair head, White Tail, Olive wing. The head is actually a mix of natural deer hair (color) and white on the bottom and natural on the top similar to deer-hair poppers. I like size 8 streamer hooks.

Woolly Buggers - Duh. I like an all white version, with a dun hackle. Size 8 & 10 streamer hooks, but after a while it was catching too many small (6 or 7 inch) fish. I'd tie size 4 or 2 in the same pattern. I think that it would be a good idea to get some weight onto the hook for that spot. I usually fish lakes (still water) and keep the hooks un-weighted.. but with the faster water a bead-head version would likely help a lot with control. (yet another trip to the drake for more stuff...lol)

Also, I had some top water terrestrials that I tie, a combo of a daddy long-legs with a muddler head basically, that really did well, till I lost them all... (tie better knots Tim, tie better knots... )...[/b]

BTW: When Jean and I were there last weekend, we did see another fly-fisher who had "appeared" from the long-island locks area and fished a bit, then appeared at the bridge. We exchanged waves but never met... if it was anyone on this site.. hello there...

Thanks for the info. I have to drop my wife off at work at 05:30, so I'll be at the park by 06:00 and with any luck (I have no skill) I'll have slayed them by the time you get there.

I'll be the old and tired looking grey-haired guy (hopefully with a big smile on my face from all the hookups)

Yeah, Fishboy gave me a new one to try (cone head muddler), but it didn't work as well as that green thingie. I only managed one hookup on it.

I'm going to stick with worked for me last time I was there (also happens to be the only time I've been there)...

Black Ghosts in size 10 & 12 as well as white/chartreuse Bunny Leeches.

My #1 SM prospecting fly is a #8 beadhead olive woollbugger (tungsten bead/cone for fast water)

This time of year a crayfish pattern works well, as to black panfish poppers.

The best fly for smallmouth that I've found so far is a #8 JJ Special. Here's the pattern info:

Jerry et al.,

I'll be at the park between 06:00 and 06:15, depending on traffic and the strength of the Timmie's tea! I'm going rain or shine- will be tying some more Swede's and Black Ghosts before then- can never have too many flies, right?
