Help with 9.9 Johnson

Hi guys,

this weekend was the first time I really took my new boat out (1993) and gave it a good run. I was having a hard time slow trolling (lowest / close to lowest) throtle. I could keep it running with a partial choke pulled, but not with it in. Just a tune up needed or any tips appreiciated. also a few other rookie questions.
- beside the choke is a dial, is this mixture?
- the end of the throtle seems to also rotate (a smaller diameter where the kills switch is) does this do something?

Hey,

I have the same motor (Evinrude). The dial next to the choke is the fuel mix (lean/rich). The adjustment on the end of the tiller handle (throttle) is for the idle speed adjustment. If you tighten (to the right), the idle speed will increase...if the screw is too loose (to the left), the idle speed will drop too low and you will stall out and have difficulty re-starting. It takes some fine-tuning, but at idle speed, slowly turn the adjustment on the tiller to the right until you get the idle to a speed where it won't stall out. Essentially, the adjustment on the end of the throttle is like a set screw, to keep the throttle from getting too low.

Better to take the time to set it up than to run with the choke...you'll just foul your plugs over time.
