Jig n Pig

Does anyone have any experience fishing with this rig. I am going to be trying it out in a weedy area tonight with my new Quantum baitcaster. Bye the way, I'm a rookie with this reel. Troubling times ahead. I know.

Tip: Bring a few jigs with you... PIKE SEEM TO LOVE THEM TOO!!! I've lost probably about 10 flippin jigs this year to them toothy critters...

Thanks Jay. Do you recommend using a leader then? If so, do you think this might put off the bass? I'm going to some prime pike waters as well as bass.

since you are just targeting bass, go without the leader, especially since you stated you are hitting weedy areas.

if you plan on doing this more often i suggest picking up a quality rod to go with that reel of yours. this type of technique can be very tiring especially with the wrong rod.

I LOVE fishing the jig-n-pig setup now that I have a baitcaster and some experience with it. It seems to mainly catch the bigger ones. The sacrifice for more quality is less quantity, but I'm OK with that.

I've never used a metal leader. I use 30lb. test spiderwire ultracast for my mainline and then 25lb. test fluoro as the leader (about 3-6' depending if I've changed it recently or not). I've only caught one pike on it this year and that was on a white rig, which I rarely throw.

if you've got the time i can help you out with the whole concept if u wanna get out sometime... and a leader just gets you caught up all day... trust me i know... but a long rod, and strong line will get you through most of what needs to be done, a lil bit of aim during pitching is handy aswell... i normally practice in the back yard or a field with a coffee can and try to pitch it in from further and further away...
