It was a good morning of fishing- if a little difficult to get around (not knowing the section of river we were on). I caught 8 sm's throughout the morning, the largest about 2lbs or so. Lots of fight in those little fish, especially with the faster current.

I didn't catch anything on my olive Woolly Buggers, but started getting strikes on my Mrs Simpson, and a little hair-wing pattern someone recommended. Don't know what the pattern is called: looks like a simple caddis pattern; black, red or yellow floss for the body (very sparse) squirrel tail for the 'wing' and bright thread for the head. Dead simple fly and seems to work quite well. I'll try to grab a pic and upload it. I'd really like to know what the pattern is called.

Cheers,

Jean

I went down to the same place last evening. No bites at all, water seemed a bit higher (not much) than the last time I was there, could probably attribute this to the rain?

I fished an olive WB and then this other fly I picked up at FP&F on the weekend (not sure what it's called or even how to describe it).

I've had very minimal luck there period, so I although I like the beauty of the spot, I don't think I'll be going back there this season.

Sean,

Where abouts are you fishing? Let me know if you want to get out for a wade Thursday or Friday evening.

Cheers,
Todd

HMG, we are heading there 2nite for a fish. Open invite of course. The cold-front that has moved in and that likely had the fish all messed up for the past two days... I'm expecting a slow bite, so I've tied up a lot of smaller sized patterns, dry and wet, hoping to get lucky.

The place is one of the nicest looking places I've been to, not that it is saying much.. but it was also a very successful place for me... and has been all season long.

Again, with the weather being what it is, I'm not having high hopes.. however, it's fall and fish gotta eat... you never know.

We'll be wet by 5:30pm

Todd,

I've been wading as far down as the cattails/lilly's down on the left where it opens up into that little bay (after the second set of rapids). All on the left side of the river Not sure what the schedule is looking like thurs or friday, i definitely need to get a few more flies before my next outing.

Hookup,

Let me know if you have any luck so I know what pattern they are hitting and also what you catch. The most i've got out of the entire area are very small smallies (no longer than 6 inches).

One thing I did notice last night, was that as soon as I came down the hill to the at the corner that is directly acroos from the Dam, there were thousands of water bugs on top of the water there, didn't see anything feeding on them though.

I've rarely seen any fish feeding on the water striders and water beetles. You'll still have a Hex hatch that can generate lots of activity as does the BWO hatch later in the month.

Overall I don't usually both fishing dry flies unless I'm bored. For the larger SM I will continue to use crayfish patterns (buggers, etc) until the water temps trigger the SM to switch over to baitfish. #8/#10 panfish poppers are also a good bet for aggressively feeding SM.

Tonight I'm hitting them with Woolly Worms in brown with Dun hackle, bead head and cone head. I'm also throwing gurglers, cause I tied some for the first time and they look fun... I will also be throwing the chili pepper that i have tied up... It was deadly last time (Sat. AM) where I got some much bigger smallies... I only have one on me so it will last until it's gone.. it was good to me... i'll be sad to see it go...

I also have a few smaller bites.. an emerger patter, i forget the name of... with bead head and antron body that should trap a bubble of air... and some smaller dry-flies (spinners)... I figure that if the bite is very slow, maybe a smaller-snack will work... we'll see...

I will bring some Mrs. Simpson as well, but mainly as backup if I just feel like something new & different...

Jean or I will post something tomorrow by way of our success.

BTW: I also waded to about the same location... My "best" fishing came where the faster water started to smooth out.. then back about 50 yrds towards the rapids. (i.e. not in smooth water, 50yard back). I was out in the middle standing on huge rocks casting to the seams... something i'm learning about now that I fly-fish...... Anyhow just at the end of the drift, directly below me, is where I was getting all the "big fish" from... on the chili pepper... love the pepper.. Tonight I am skipping most of the rapids from the damn (where you described getting to the water) and heading fast down to the first big bend.. and then really taking my time in the last set of rapids... should be production...

The Chili Pepper has been a hot smallmouth fly for me this season.
