How can i tell what model year my merc 9.8 is?

Can serial # tell?
I believe 9.8 HP is about 70 or 80's.

Hello, If you take down your serial number and call Mercury customer suport/service they should be able to tell what year your motor is.

Nope,no go.The motor i have is Canadian built,maybe thats why?

did you GOOGLE it? I just did and came up with many links of the same make/model... one was a 1978.
