Help Miami Fishing
Help Miami Fishing
So here goes, Im a poor university student and Im going to Miami over christmas for a few days.
I can afford a chartered fishing trip but was planning on relaxing and just sitting on the dock and fishing.
The only problem I've got is I have no idea what I need for saltwater fishing of the miami coast.
Im used to fishing in the ottawa river and i've got a nice amount of gear but what should I bring and what should I not? what do I need to buy?
Thanks for all the help guys
Cheers
Also what kind of fish can I expect to catch of the piers?

I have never fished the ocean . But from what I know the saltwater can do a number on your gear. They make stuff just for salt water. If you have to use your normal gear rinse it off well after each use.

There are peacocks in the States? I thought those were only in South America...
Damn!! I'd give the left one to catch hold of some of those!
I have caught Sheephead off of the beach in Ft Lauderdale. Big treble and minnows (BIG minnows... Mullet as I recall). Good fight... but Red snapper and Yellow and Black bass are what you should be after! Good fight and the yellow sea bass are supposed to taste good.
From what I understand (And I am no salt pro by any means!), big bloody chunks of meat on a treble seem to be the weapon of choice most of the time in the ocean.
I think trout and mackerel will hit on top waters as I hear.
Good luck and tell us how it goes!

They are found in Florida too, in the canals and some of the lakes. Peacock Bass fishing in the Florida southeast canals looks like a wicked fishing trip. Or better yet on the Amazon.cprince wrote:There are peacocks in the States? I thought those were only in South America...

OMFG!!
I feel a trip coming on.
My parents go to Florida every year, and stay in New Port Richey
They have a intercoastal waterway that runs right behind there place
I didnt catch much, then I bought some frozen shrimp, and did really well
So, my advice would be if you are fishing from shore, get yourself some shrimp - I used is with a small circle hook and 2 small split shot about 18 inches above the hook
Gordy

You can buy Shrimp at the local shops and use those with a hook and sinker up about 16 inches. The heavier the line the better usually.
Squid are also sold there.
I fished that way years ago off bridges in the Keys and caught a lot of Yellow Tail/snapper/and one big grouper.
Careful though, some bridges are off limits because of boat traffic.
I'm sure when you get there the locals will clue you in.
Do rinse off the reel well though like in the previous post.
Take Pics!
Best of luck!

Miami Fishing
Hi,
Just a heads up.
You will need a FLorida non-resident license for fishing off the bridges, beaches or back canals.
You do not need a license if you fish with a licensed Charter boat or from a licensed wharf (where you pay to fish)
The rates are similar to our non-residend license for 3 day, one week and annual.
Super

Hey guys thanks for all the help. From what I can gather I can pretty much use my gear by ditching my 10 pds test and getting something stronger. Also using tremble hooks and some local bait. Will take some picture. And as for the ladies well I don't think my girlfriend would appreciate them to much but i guess you never know what could happen.
Anymore info would be great
Thanks

I have spent alot of time down that way, lived there fora year and head down once or twice per year. What fish would you like to catch?
If you are on a budget you have a few options... you can hit a drift boat fishing day ( kingfish, bonita, snapper) or hit a local pier . Pier fishing is alot of fun and you can catch some quality fish. Best to head north around Lauderdale ( about a half hour drive) Anglins, Pompano and Deerfield piers are all good... besides that some of the intercoastal bridges produce fish ( espeicially at night). After rain you can try any of the spillways you can catch bass, snook and baby tarpon...
Your best bet is to head south to the keys for a day... you can camp out on the bridges and fish all night...
if you need more info drop me a pm. I can see if my friends are available to take you out as well

Your right your GF probably WOULDN'T like that....
But remember. Your allowed to look!
That's not cheating!
LOL!
Good luck with the fishing...I don't have a clue what you'd even catch. I've been to Florida twice. Once to get on a cruise ship, the other to catch a flight to Grand Cayman to see my brother.
