BIG Ottawa River EYE!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

BIG Ottawa River EYE!

Post by valley_boy »

Hi there! I've been checking this site on and off for a while now, but this is my first report. I have a digital camera I can bring fishing now so I hope to start posting lots of reports! Anyway, I got out on the ice for the first time this year on Saturday on the Ottawa in West Carleton. I set up on rocky drop off that had been productive for walleye this summer. I also got my first sonar for christmas so I was anxious to use it. I got a small one and lost another on the tip before the sun when down, but none on the sonar. Then just after it got dark I saw a dark thick bar show up on the sonar and felt a heavy thump. I was only using 8lb test so it took me a while to get it in. It was fighting so hard I though it was a big pike, so I was thrilled when when I saw the distinctive eyes coming through the hole. Not sure on the weight but it was 31 inches long! It honestly maybe Had a half inch to spare in girth in my 8 inch hole. Beat my old PB my 3 inches. It may not be huge by Quinte strandards but on the Ottawa it is a monster. I was hoping to release it but it somehow got hooked in the gill and was bleeding pretty bad. I tried reviving it for a good 5 min but when I started to loose feeling in my hands I gave up. I felt bad keeping such a big fish, but what can u do, sometimes they dont make it. Anyway, I dont have a scale so any guesses on the weight would be appreciated! I know its over 10 but thats it.
Thanks
ValleyBoy

That is a great fish for any water body.

BTW: Next time you're going out let me know and I'll bring my scale, seems like a fair trade

That is a great OLD fish from the Ottawa!

I'd be getting it mounted rather than table fare but that's me...like you said...sometimes they don't make it...

My guess....between 10 and 11 pounds...

Congrats!

Nice fish i agree with RJ, i have caught my share of big eye's and when they hit 31 to 32 inch long they are in the 10 to 12 lb,s, sometime's more depending on the gut. Red
