Hello Fish-hawkers,
I've been a long time lurker, and have been wanting to try some fishing in our capital for a long time. I'm finally getting the opportunity! I will be in Ottawa all of next week for work, and was wondering if someone can give me a few spots that I can wet my line close to the downtown area. (within 30 minutes max) I'm hoping do some fishing after work each day before heading back to the hotel.
Any suggestions on tackle and location with direction would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance,
VB

There are a few places in town that would work out for you. You can try the Rideau river at Carlton U. Upstream from there is Hogs Back, at the base of the fall there is a great pool that can land you all kinds of diffrent fish. I'm sure there will be lots of input from the others on this also.
Good luck

Bobber is correct but if you cannot access the Ils you may try right below the locks beside the art gallery in the heart of downtown.I fish there quite often and have a pretty good track record there too.I will be happy to meet up with you one day after work to give you a first hand look at a few close spots to downtown.Either send me a pm or email me and I shall give you my contact info for next week!

rideau falls is another good spot! If you take King Edward ave, to the end you would be at a set of lights. Go straight , it's a parking lot , park further in to the right and walk towards the falls you should see others fishing there as well, if not (Bonus) look down over the falls you should see and island on your right and rocks on the shore in front of it (good spot there) or fish on the left side of the falls , again on the rocks (another good spot). Lots of carp, cats , and some walleye's can be had there. Dough balls work good for carp there, in the failing light or better yet when it's dark, you should be fighting a pretty good sized carp evey 1/2 hour or so. Also if carp is your target DON'T forget the canal, it can produce some big carp, (word of caution) bring a net trying to land a carp through the bars as you hang over the side is not the best idea!
GOOD LUCK!

Gee, thanks to everyone! You guys are a very helpful group. I was surprise to get so many replies already.
From the sounds of it, I'm good to go with a rod and some tackle, I'll bring a long handle net as prescribed, but will not be keeping any of my catch...I'm sure the hotel would not appreciate the smell of fish in my room...LOL!
I only wish that we could do the same thing in Toronto...to fish right downtown that is.
Anyway, thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming, will definitely try a couple of the spots, and maybe the one on the Shore Pickeral post.
FLOATFISHIN, I'll email/pm for sure, love to have someone to fish with

Carlton U is really good. Another great spot is out along the Rideau out by the RA center oin Riverside. I've gone there many times and caught quite a large variety of fish. Floaters, jigs and spoons will land you just about any of them. If you're gonna head out that way, pm me and I'll be more than happy to join ya and show you a few more spots. I live downtown (Riverside & Bank), it'd be my pleasure.
Cheers,
