It might be time to ban ice fishing
or what can we do to stop the useless polution of our waters?
Has anyone driven by Petrie in the last week? The left over garbage on the ice made me sick. What if every ice fishing spot were loaded with garbage like that? I can just imagine what the bottom of the river looks like in that bay, must be gross. And most of that junk will float away to polute some other areas.
I must admit I was discusted to see that much junk out there. Maybe the opoerators can be made responsible for cleaning the ice after the shacks are pulled off. But not all fishing spots are operated by a business.

Actually mosty of the garbage seen from the road is just pieces of wood and saw dust. It looks a lot worst than what it is. I am not saying that it's right. There is the odd can or something stuck in the ice and now that the ice is melting we start seeing them.
I only saw two spots that were left by people that don't give a darn about the environment . One is a shack that was made out of white plastic an it is still outhere. and the other place is where there is a couple of wood pallets that were left on the ice. But if you go for a ride right on the ice you will see that it looks a lot worse from the road.

Richard,
This is something that repeats season after season and you're right....it's disgusting!!.....I got back home yesterday after being away on a fishing trip and went out on the river for a walk with the wife....it seems better then last year as far as debris left over but there's still enough "junk" out there such as the spare tire that no one wants to stop for and throw it in the back of their truck!!
Maybe it's time to really raise this environmental issue to our Goverment and local media...Also, each ice hut is registered with MNR and as long as you have proof of where the ice hut was located (pictures are great
) they will be notified to clean up the debris or face a fine...
There was an incident earlier this season with a couple of ice shacks out on Buchams Bay.... a bunch of reckless guys that didn't have any respect for the environment got fined and ordered to remove their shacks off the ice....the Ottawa Police were involved and charges were laid....the police and MNR received numerous complaints regarding excessive noise and broken beer bottles thrown all over the ice around their shacks....Then the officer that was involved wrote a small article in the local paper describing what happened and warned others that littering and environmental abuse on the ice will not be tolerated.
He also included the OPS phone# and his extension and urged residents to report any issues they are concerned about regarding ice shacks and intolerable behaviour...
It's too bad that a few ROTTEN apples maybe ruining the future of bringing ice shacks out on the river....

Like Dan was saying it's not as bad as it actually looks although it still get's to me and many others no doubt...I took a walk out yesterday to see he and a few others were doing and and really only noticed a lot of wood(Shack bases) and that plastic tarped shack way out there..We were talking about this and no, Petrie is not responible for cleaning up after these pigs on the ice and I don't think they should be for a few reasons. I think a new law should be made clear to hut owners for sure, it is pretty sickening to know some really don't give a crap about our waters at all

been drivin by petrie everday 4 20 years and have to agree with wallyboss.i've seen it a lot worse.after most of the shacks came off some garbage was left including an office chair.next day it was gone, kudos to oziles, must have been them that picked it up.but yes there are a lot of thoughtless people out there!
Not sure that its time to ban ice fishing because a few bad apples.
I drove around my lake yesterday and noticed that there was no garbage to be found anywhere that there had been shacks.
Job well done to those with shacks on Mink Lake (Eganville) except for the 2 shacks that appear to be abandoned.

I'm really against people who don't have respect for the enviromnent. No Oziles is not responsable to take off the garbage! I have a shack in that bay and when it's time to take of my shack i remove everything .... all you see is 2 holes and a sqare shaped clear ice. I think that the ministry should bring out new rules concerning this issue..... giving out more severe fines and what not.... Anyways will always have people like that I guess !

Ice clean up
Hi,
I agree with all of the comments. We endeavor to get ice hut owners to keep the area around their huts cleans and clean up once they pull their shacks off. Unfortunately not all are very compliant. After the ice is clear we go out, at our expense, and clean up as best we can. So far we have pulled 5 trailer loads of assorted wood, litter and garbage off the ice. I expect/hope to make another pass later this week and get more as the ice melts and more garbage is accessible. The white tent was a new person, never registered with us. I visited the tent a few weeks back and saw a stove, stove pipe and chair still inside. I waited last minute to see if the owner was going to come back and since he has not, went out and removed what we could before it sank and became a boating/environmental hazard.
It is indeed unfortunate that a few leave an impression which paints the many in the wrong manner...
Cheers
Yves

Yves, I am sure if you need a hand to get that garbage off the ice all you need to do is ask. With a couple of spud bars and a trailer I am sure that between 3-4 guys a good clean up can be done. Now that the time has changed we have a few extra hours after work that we could take care of that. So if you need help just ask.
I could supply a quad.

I agree that it is disgusting what people leave behind on the ice. I was out on constance lake this year and I saw a few holes that someone had actually used as a garbage can! There was a few beer cans and chip bags etc shoved down the hole and it all froze there! I dont think that the problem is only ice fishing though. I'm sure these people do the same thing when they are out in their boats in the summer.... you just can't see it becuase it sinks right away!

Ban ice fishing????>>>>>>> naw that won't solve the debris/littering issueRJ wrote:Yep....Ban ice fishing...that'll solve littering.
Ban ice huts>>>>>> I believe that this would definately cut down on the stuff that's left over every year after Mar 15....Shack skis that were stuck in the ice, frames, wooden blocks, plastic that people used to stop the wind from going under the shack, cement blocks used for shacks to sit on, etc.etc.etc.....I've seen it all out here being a waterfront resident and it ain't pretty!!.....
