Brown trout

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

The species was brought back from only a few fish after acidification and failed attempts at culturing them and finally it was succesfully stocked into - what I thought was only 3 lakes..but I guess it's 9 now?

The other neat thing is that even though they are considered Endangered under the Endangered Species Act, fisheries managers have done a great job ensuring that their populations remain stable while allowing a fishery so future generations can continue to enjoy the great fishing opportunities.

Have you seen the colour of their meat? Poppy Red!
For anyone looking for more information on Aurora Trout you should pick up this month's Canada Out of Doors magazine, as there is a great piece on this species. Being from Sudbury I appreciated the Big Nickel attachment to this fish, I'd love to have the chance to catch one some day.

By the sounds of it they are an unbelievably frustrating fish to try to catch. They basically have lock jaw from 2 days after opening morning right through until there are a few days left in the season. Talk about a short window of opportunity. But their beautiful colours are one-of-a-kind and make them a trophy fish regardless of the size.

I'm not sure that they are a sub-species of the rainbow as a previous poster had eluded....there still appears to be some debate on that topic. They could be closer related to the char or even the brown trout...or an entire species unto themselves, depending on who's research you believe.

I have caught many browns In Nova Scotia but unfortunately none here. My bait of choice for them is actually a small panfish rapala in trout pattern. I have caught them up to 10lbs on this tiny bait. It works in both streams and lakes but like I say, not sure about here but I know if I was going for them that's what I would be throwing. Good Luck.
