pike leaders on the fly?

Post by Hookup »

So, when I fish for PIKE using spinning / casting gear, I some times use a leader... teeth and all...

what do you use when you fly-fish for pike??? I've never tried to catch these guys, but it seems that many fish take flies deeper into their mouths, and as such, a pike would most likely cut the mono tippet...

anyone?

They make a wire tippet that you can attach, it's able to make knots as well.

You can find it at Float Paddle and Fly.

It is similar to THIS.

Hope that helps.

A number of us were tying our own leaders with 50lb flourocarbon as the bite tippet.

Wire leader ..

Post by D-mo »

there are mono leaders, I believe 17lb, with a wire extension and crimp ring available from Climax .. I used them for flyfishing toothy critters in Cuba a few days back ... and they perform just great.

I've used the Orvis straight wire tippets, 50lb fluoro and the RIO knottable wire.

The Orvis straight wire tippets are decent. They can be bent back to straight after a good tussle with a pike.

The 50lb flouro leader is too much of a PIA to tie a knot in and probably requires a snap since the leader is too thick to go through the eye of the hook. This flouro is hard to straighten and the fly doesn't turn over very well (not that it matters for pike).

I like the RIO knottable wire. It's about $20 for a 15 ft spool of 20lb test so it's not cheap (but this is fly fishing so it's not anything new) but make the leader with a Mustad hook clip on one end and a perfection loop on the other. The entire leader ends up being about 6" and takes about 12" of material to tie.

HTH,
Doug
