Do hooks really rust out?

Read an article in In-Fisherman that stated the hook doesn't rust out, it gave best ways to remove hooks from deep hooked fish. Wish I could tell you the issue but can't. I do remember it said to go in through the gills to remove hook, maybe that will help, Joe.

I've hooked them deep and put them in the livewell for the day and they were realeased, don't know if they died later....the times I tried to remove the hooks before I saw this porcedure I killed the fish,....and I do tournaments....this is hard to do on smallmouths and have never tried it on other fish say walleye or muskies.....hooks do rust out better in salt water but they are the cheap kind....and it took weeks....

I witness this method in action last summer for the first time. I deep hooked two smallies on the Saint John river in NB and the tournament angler I was with showed me the technique. I probably would have killed both fish trying to get the hooks out. He had the hooks out of both fish in under a minute.

There was research done just a short time ago on hooks rusting out, the kill rate for cutting the line and leaving the hook in was 100% So if at all possible you need to get the hook out or the fish will die. I will try to find the article and post it here. I should add that I mean deep hooked

Can vouch for this, as I had a recent discussion with our dogs' veterinarian, who is also an avid and expert musky fisherman. He quoted the same statistic from this study as Muskie4L is talking about, above.

It's a sad and somewhat surprising fact, but an eye opener nonetheless.

I could be mistaken but I think the study Ted and Wolfe are refering to was published in ESOX angler.

It was a study on single hooked sucker rigs for Muskies and Pike. Basically the fish was allowed to swallow the hook, landed, line cut and released.

Every fish died, all of them had major damage done to their insides. Whether it was from torn throats and stomach's from the fight, or tears and punctures when trying to pass the hook. Every fish died!!

Hooks will rust out, just will take a couple of years. If the fish can still feed during that time it might make it.....most will not.

I'm pretty sure that the "hooks rust out" idea came from salt water fishing, and in that case it is probably true. However I am sure that even the barbed end of a hook cut off with bolt cutters could lead to infection and kill a freshwater fish. I bought some "circle" hooks and I am anxious to try them out and see if they work.

Have you ever tried using them for sturgeon...that is where I think they might really shine, but I`m concerned that the shape of the mouth might make it harder for the hook to catch....

If you do a quick search you'll find that most sturgeon anglers are moving to circle hooks.
