cant wait to hit victoria island.

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

They bite pretty much all summer. But I have found that the most numbers was mid summer. But last year we haven't caught good numbers like the years before hopefully they will be back with a vengeance this year.

So for fishing the channel cats. I am assuming a heavier action rod, heavier braided line, 2/0 Octopus hooks and smelt or something equally as smelly?

Is it best to use a baitcast reel or spin?

Thanks and looking forward to it!

Jamers,

Go for the 2/0 circle hooks!

Thanks Todd,

So 2/0 circle work better than 2/0 Octo's?
So am I ok using a stiffer rod with heavier braid?
Smelt, liver?

Only ever caught bullheads....

I have a 9ft Ugly stick medium action rod and 14lb braid on spinning reel. you will need lots of 2oz egg sinkers and circle hooks. If you are not the patient type circle hooks might not be good for you. With a circle hook you have to wait and wait, even if the rod is bouncing up and down. you wait until it becomes a slow steady pull then you reel in, do not set the hook to strong or you will pull the hook right out. Some nights the circle hooks are useless. if the cats just chomp down on your bait and they don't turn around and swim away with the bait then a regular worm hook is much better. I've seen many nights of missing bites with circle hooks and as soon as I changed hooks started to get hookups. As for bait the only thing I use is raw shelled shrimps. I've caught cats with gulp nightcrawlers one night and they were barely biting on live worms or shrimps.

just put my new line on the cat rod tonight.ready to go.
so all cats stuff is goin in the truck this week and will be there for a few week...or months. 8)

i use a reg..shimano..FXS-90MHB2 9 foot mh rod wit 25 pound line on it. and use a carp fishing rod holder in dirt to hold the rod.

shrimps is my main bait and worms..nothing to fancy.

sometime i try other stuff to..fromes cats bait to liver to all kind off try out off home made baits.

donr realy need anything special to fish cats.

but i would say at lest med hard rod..not to soft.
