Round Lake report (June 5,6)

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Round Lake report (June 5,6)

Post by slushpuppy »

Not much to report, unfortunately. Tried for pike all along the Bonnechere river between the lake and the dam. Nada. As for the lake, it was perch all around. No walleye. The walleye is really scarce now in the lake. They should probably close it for walleye like they did in Golden Lake, let the population re-establish itself. Sunday the water was really choppy, too much for our little aluminum boat. Bowzog got all wet negotiating the waves. We didn't stay out for long, caught a few perch again.

We left the cottage in early afternoon so we could stop at a few shore spots on our way home. One of the spots that produced pike, although very small pike, was behind the cheese factory in Eganville. I get a bite on my first cast, as I'm getting the little fella out of the water, it starts fighting again and breaks my line. It swam away with Bowzog's favourite Rapala.

Another pike spot was an old bridge on, what else, Old Bridge Road, near Hwy 60/Tramore Rd where Hwy 60 crosses the Bonnechere. Bowzog could see a nice size pike investigating his Mizmo white tube, but he wasn't biting. After a couple of bucketmouths took the bait, we decided to move on.

No fish pictures for this weekend, just some turlte and heron pics. Sunburn and mosquito bites.

Good to hear you got out Slushpuppy. Too bad the pike weren't hungry.

I got out yesterday evening for a perch fish. We caught lots of jumbo's and I was lucky enough to get my first pike this year.

We'll be heading to Ottawa this weekend. Mark is fishing in the Castfest Derby and I'll be camping with the girls. I hope we find a nice shore spot on Sunday to make a few casts.

Could be another Round Lake?

Cheers,

Round Lake:

Had Round Lake on my places to try till I read your post. Sounds like its' been hit pretty hard. Makes sense; lots of traffic up Bonnchere way.

Did you catch any bass in the lake?? That was to be the "target" fish

Sorry the fishing wasen't better, although some perch aren't bad if they're big enough.

Regards: Jigs.

Paya,

I followed the link; the 2 round lakes they mention are not the lake Slushpuppy visited. This Round Lake is West of Pembroke.

Cheers,

Don't want to stop anyone from going, but as I said, it's not as good as it should be. There are lake trout and whitefish in there, we just never target them because we don't have the equipment. We also don't have a fishfinder, so we have to rely on maps to find humps and shoals where the walleye would be. We keep talking about getting a fishfinder but never actually bought one. 8)

We didn't catch any bass on the lake, wasn't looking for them as the season isn't open. Bowzog caught his best smallmouth there last summer, if I compare it to my best (3.28 lbs), his would probably have been 3.5 - 4lb.

One thing we have noticed about the smallies in that lake, it's that their colouring is very dark. They almost look black.
