Out of season fish taking pics...

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Sight Fishing

Post by grumpy7790 »

Didn't Shaw Grigsby make a living out of "Sight Fishing" spawning bass in Bassmaters?

Here in PA we have a one month of closed season for harvesting Bass. In fact, the Pre-Spawn bite can be very exciting for Smallmouths. I guess if you fish long and hard enough you get over the need to film large catches. But if the camera is available then go for it.

Its like anything else, the more you have the more you want. So eventually its becomes harder and harder to exceed previous trips you had on the water. I myself do not consider an OOS fish to be weighed and called my personal best. I take a quick look and admire them, but let them go quickly. Then I try to figure were that fish should be mid-season in relationship to spot it was caught.

Interesting topic,

CCB thank you for the reply, I knew I wasn't dreaming RE: US tourneys. My grandfather taught me how to fish, he was a native of Bristol England and an excellent fisherman. I remember when I was 15 yrs old he came to visit us and I showed him some pictures of trout I had caught he asked me what I caught them on and I said worms, he threw the pictures on the floor in disgust and said worming for trout i won't even look! His generation there views, I'll still worm for trout . Different times different thoughts. I think like you but if the fisherman caught it out of season and handled it gently take your pic and return it only the PETA people should have a problem with anything different

I guess I am in the same boat as FLOATFISHING. My girlfriend who just barley fish's, I mean I have to drag her out and promise her things to come. Anyway point of my story is thatwe we like Floatfishing, Jigging for eyes along a weedbed in 17-21 ft of water. While doing so my girlfriend had a hit and it ended up being the BIGGEST largemouthbass that I have ever physically seen. When I first saw it jumped I was shocked. Anyway she got it to the boat and as soon as i got the hok out of the mouth my buddie and my girlfriend both took pictues. My personal record LM is 6 + 24inch. her bass was at least 7+ lbs so we took a few pictures and milked her back and she gave me a nice splash and was off. We relocated right after. My point is that I am a strong believer in not fishing OOF but like a few others have said, it is enevitable. Taking a picture does'nt mean your targeting fish, your capturing a moment like Markus said. To my GF this is the best thing to happen to her while fishing and now she is asking me to go back...I told her when Bass Opens.

No you're right RJ, you never, but here's a recap of a few comments. And please don't confuse me as being insulted...water of a ducks back really.

FF said I would be promoting out of season fishing and called me a poacher.

Probassing called me a bragger.

Big Bass Rich said by posting I'd be a poacher.

And Legend said the photo would be eviedence that I was on "the hunt" for out of season fish.

Like I said, water of a ducks back....because in fact I am not for out of season fishing, I'm in no way a poacher, I do brag a bit, but not about oos fish, and I was never hunting for out of season fish (37 ethical fisherman at muskrat got to see what I was hunting for).

We shouldn't put everyone in the same basket once they click that camera. Not everyones reason for snapping a photo are the same. They are not breaking any laws and shouldn't be looked at as unethical either.

What's positive about my bass photo. I've shared a laugh/experience with a new friend and have a photo that will always remind me of a grwat guy who know's about handling oos fish. Which includes a perfect catch and realease. And I've shown people the quality of bass that Muskrat holds, hopefully they can plan a trip there in season and enjoy some great smallmouth fishing.

What if Big Joe had hooked a 50 inch muski??? There isn't supposed to be any in the lake and he's enjoying a trip to Canada. Don't you think one picture would be nice for his scrapbook?

As it has been said before no matter the size out of season fish should be released imediatly with the least handling possible. Taking pictures of OOS fish is illegal period. There is no grey area here, all sportsman should understand why we have laws and even if it is a personal best the fish should not be handled and released ASAP. The future of our fisheries depend on it.

A pre spawn bass or muskie can be messed up by any kind of handling. As for post spawn bass are also taken off the beds and other fish move in and eat their eggs or YOY while your smilling for the camera.

Definatly a NONO to take pictures, definatly a NONO to post pictures and no one should be praised for an OOS catch not mater what it is.
Catch and release them all

Trophymuski, if you could, could you contact MNR and find out what the fine is for photographing an oos fish? Is it the same amount they fine tourist for photographing moose on the side of the highway in the summer??

If it is illegal, I will stop without question.

Sorry everyone! I'm a bit of a dog with a bone on this thread! :?

I just need someone to show me that it is in fact wrong...not just that they feel it is wrong. Cripes i feel it's wrong for a person over 250 pounds to wear spandex and little tank tops, but everytime i go to town - there they are strutting around scratching their loto tickets! :(

As Legend says, it is one big grey area. I personally don't have too much of a problem with anyone taking a picture of an out-of-season fish.

The fact that a fish is out of season in Ontario some how taints it for a picture for me. I think what taints it for me is the fact that I was not trying to catch that fish - it was a fluke.

If I can catch that same fish on Derby day it is a moment of great pride. But when I catch one that grabbed a spinner bait while searching for pike, it just doesn't feel the same. Like Bacon - "What a fish - shame its not in season."

I've seen many posts in this thread stating beyond a dought that taking a picture of an oos fish is illegal, not to beat a dead horse but could someone tell me where that is in the regs because I can not find it in my regs and a call to the ministry today could also not confirm for or against that such a rule exists But I'm sure someone out there must have read it and I think myself and many others would like to read it.I for one will stop taking these pictures if someone can show me in black and white that its illegal :? :? :? :? :?

This sounds like the dilemma about fishing for Musky with a conservation license. That one is clear as mud as well.

OOS

Post by grumpy7790 »

I also think we should keep the thread to dealing with taking pics of OOS fish. Unless you have a degree in fishery or zoology or participate in scientific studies on the matter, then we should not make comments on what effect we have when fishing for pre, spawn, post-spawn fish.

That being said, taking a quick photo of "one" fish definetly is not illegal.

But hey, maybe the CO's now have the fuel for a new $$$ making reg.

"sir are you carrying a camera, we'll be back in an hour with our findings"

Musky is open, just not on the Ottawa River, witch brings up a point, This whole discussion started from a musky on the Ottawa. Is there really a difference between the Ottawa river and the Madawaska or Rideau? I have caught fish legally not 1 mile from where your telling me I can’t take a picture of one for I may harm it.
