Disappointed with Trilene

Hi McQ; Liked your posting.. I learn something every time I read a post. Its amazing the number of variables one must deal with when fishing. I just checked the last eye on my spinning rod and now realize that I better change it. Checked out your site-interesting.

Yesterday, while fishing eater walleye with Berkley 6 lb XT on my 4 foot light action rod I got a snag in about 2 feet of water only a yard or two off the shore. When I gave the rod a good yank to get off I felt 3 violent head shakes.

After a 15 minute struggle, pulling up anchor, getting nearly spooled twice, and being pulled down current in our twenty foot freighter canoe, I almost got the fish to the boat. My buddy who was frantically running the motor, holding the net, pulling up anchor, and cheering me on was ready at the back of the boat to net the big fish. When we saw it surface too far to reach he said to me, "we ain't netting that f*#%ing fish." The two tips on the tail were about 9-10 inches apart, and the fish was we guess about 50-60 inches. When it turned it's nose at the boat and saw us it screamed under the boat and headed up current. Half my line got sppoled again and the boat which was still drifting turned awkawardly and my line got caught on the anchor rope knot on the nose of the canoe. The line snapped at the knot, right at my jig. The brief catch on the anchor rope knot cost me my first sturgeon.

BERKLEY TRILENE XT IS STILL THE MOST AMAZING LINE I HAVE EVER HANDLED. IT WILL ALWAYS BE MY FIRST CHOICE IN MONOFILAMENTS.

When it comes to ones choice in products, it usually narrows down to confidence. No one will use something they don't think is any good. I have total confidence when using Berkley line. The fish I lose will always be due to human error.

Until you spool up a bad batch of line!

Good job on that sturgeon. I'm hoping to tangle with one myself some day. And I hope it's similar to your experience in a small boat. I love the feeling of being pulled around by a strong fish, kind of reminds me of "the Old Man and the Sea".

The bad batch is inevitable in life, but if it's XT I'm just gonna take my chances then and keep buying more spools until it's a good one.

Hi guys, I saw this post and had to give my experience. I arrived in Canada 6 years ago from UK and quickly got into the fishing scene. All is different here, shorter rods, stronger line and nearly all the fish have teeth!!! I bought a boat - you may see me around Fitzroy/Arnprior "Blue and White Spectrum Bowrider". My real problem was finding a suitable line. I started with 6lb Stren (I think) and had nothing but problems, fine for jigging but many snap-offs when Bass'ing. I tried many others and ended up using spiderwire with a 2ft fluro Carbon leader - this works great for me - I can feel every pebble on the Ottawa floor. Last year while visiting Vermont I saw Maxima line in a local store. Now your talking quality line - It is one of the most popular lines in UK and really strong for the diameter - Now Canadian Tire sell it. If your at your wits end for a good line and prefer mono. Give Maxima a try.

Recently tried the Maxima as well. I was thoroughly impressed. I trust the Berkley but I know keep an extra spool of 10 lb Chameleon in the tackle box. Great choice of line.
