lac poisson blanc

Hello everyone. New to this site. Found the site while trying to do some research for an upcoming trip to Lac Poisson Blanc (Whitefish Lake). Looks like a great information sharing group here. I haven't been able to find a lot of good information on Poisson Blanc, O'hara, Brochett, etc; that whole watershed area.

I am taking a small group (3-4) on a week long camping/fishing excursion in this area. We will hopefully be camping on one of the islands and using that as a base to explore the smaller side lakes and work the big lake. I'm looking for any and all the information I can get. Everything from camping locations to fishing locations and tips. We will be bringing a portagable boat with us, so locating some out of the way spots is a real bonus. We will be bringing tackle for a variety of fish; primarily pike, walleye, and bass. And some basics for lakers. So tackle suggestions would help. We are limited on how much gear we will be able to transport in by small boats. Any nearby, easily portagable lakes worth hitting would be a real bonus. I'm sure we can manage to fit a small trout box in with our gear.

fished there a lot as a kid running a lead core line with various spoons like millers an suttons, williams. my grandfather would be downrigging while we leadcored... always got alot of fish... the lake iis HUGE and you dont wanna get caught in a storm.. i member once we did in a 16 foot princecraft... barel.y made it to one of the islands an the boat got pounded on the rocks... very ncie lake though... good memories.

Nice lake, great scenery and hardly any boat traffic due to the size of it.

We used to rent a cottage there so never camped but there are many islands to choose from. As far as fish, the usual works here.

Bass = head for the islands with deep dropoffs and chuck tubes and senkos and hold on. Big o's work as well.

Pike = big pike, but could be tricky to find. Head for the many bays where the water is calmer and use big spoons or spinners at the end of the bays.

I never fished for walleye/trout there so can't help you.

Have fun and bring lots of insect repellant! And don't forget to post a report and pics!

We have had a family camp on Lac Campion for over forty years. But since I've been a workin' stiff, my time there has been limited to weekend get aways and the occassional family vacation. I haven't been able to focus on any serious fishing up that way since I was kid. Back then we focused mainly on walleyes in Lac du Sables and the Lievre River. We rarely ventured to Poisson Blanc, so it is not a place I am very familiar with. So there is an allure for me. Such a great place so close all these years. That was why my brother and I decided to camp there for the week. That way there would be no excuses and we could explore someplace new everyday.

Plenty of fish in the Lake , but very easy to get lost ,many of islands all look the same ........

6'' gulp watermelon pattern ,,,deadly for smallies

Northam spinner baits for pike,,,5/8 Magnum Perch Pattern......

wife's family had a cottage there for years till it burnt down,lot of smallmouth,pike ,and huge perch ,trout in the lower end near kirks landing,an area they call sand bar.there used to be signs prohibiting camping on the islands.check ptarmigan camping u can rent camping spaces or cottages at the north end and on the adjoining lac des saubles.amazing place,but you will need more than a week to explore it all.have fun and post a report with pics plz.this place is a soft spot for me,my kids learned to swim and fish there! look i'm gettin teary eyed now.

You can find a map of poisson blanc with fishing hotspots on it at World of Maps in Ottawa. There are two sand bars, one small and one big. The key to catching lake trout here is to impart a lot of action to your lures or bait. Jigging is a favorite technique.

yes that is on my list of weekend spots for this summer , never been on it . I knew a gang that used to go and camp the long weekend in August every year , few times they got stuck on an island and couldn't get off due to the waves . Should be an interesting time . I did take a drive one sunday , over Pagan Dam at low and ended up at a landing on the PB , there was parking for a couple of rigs and that was it . There must be a larger public launch with parking somewhere ? If anyone can direct me to it that would be cool .
Caribou , keep us posted as I would be looking to camp for a night also .

Your best public launch on the north end is going to at Lac Campion. Not exactly close, but it is public, concrete, and has parking.

Thank you to everyone for the information thus far. I look forward to more. I would like to get as much as possible. I'm planning to head up this weekend to open my camp and hopefully do an exploritory run down to Poisson Blanc to scout it out.

Bring your rain gear , forecast is calling for a fair bit .

Great smallmouth bass fishing. Look for rock shoals. I found that the smallies will hold tight to football size boulders and the bite is really on when there is a slight chop on the lake. Many big bass in the lake 3+ pounds so I have always been known to chuck the bigger baits for 'em as well as plastic. In and around Poltimore there are some great brooks for specs as well. I learned to fish creek brookies here when I when I was younger.
