NW ontario road trip finale

Well, I ended my business trip on Friday night in Thunder Bay. My buddy was taking me out fishing the next day to a lake called Dog lake just north of Thunder bay for some walleye.

We left Saturday morning and set up camp in my biddies unusual camper;



And set out in other buddies nice LUND



Its a 20.5 foot with a 225hp Yamaha (cowling had pait work done due to scratches

Boat was geared up with electronics that made me just a little bit envious






yes we had satellite radio while fishing for eyes.

caught our limits of walleye in no time flat... here is a pic of a typical blueish walleye, we traded up numerous times.



The MNR boys came by and practically rammed right into our boat.. then proceeded to board and basically harassed us for about 30 minutes trying desperately to find something they could ticket us with. Heard at the campground later that they had ticketed an old fellow for fishing without a license at 15 days before his 65'th B-day

Anyway, we made it back to camp in time for supper and refreshements





we ate fish and drank until 2:30 this morning. Woke up at 7am to drive across the lake and limit out in 90 minutes flat!!!!!

Flew back to Ottawa this afternoon and now I am ready for bed...

I agree, Dog Lake isn't the best place for walleye, but hey you got limits so good job! Any size to any of the ones you got? My brother (avid walleye fisherman up there) got a 33" walleye on opening weekend and that thing was faaaat. Put back into the water to spawn again. He did say the fishing in the area has been pretty good lately though so maybe Dog lake is making a comeback.

Nice colour on that one in the pic (and the fried ones too... hehehe!). Haven't seen a blue walleye like that since I got one myself about 5 years ago up there. Most are the normal gold colour.

The largest we got were about 3 pounds... nothing huge.... most people were having a hard time catching them.. but we had the knowledge and the electronics to find them.... They were SUPER finicky......

I never thought that such little changes in technique can make such a difference at catching walleye!!!!

It was amazing.

Had to use clear mono line tied directly to a pink or blue jig head with a live minnow only.... any other combination and you got skunked!!!!

we fished the river inlet in the channel wherever there was structure.

One buddy in the boat refused to go to clear mono and kept his snap swivel on the line too... guess what? ... he got skunked..... I was getting skunked too as I was using one of his rods with braided line on it.... when I saw the other buddy outfishing us, I got rid of the snap swivel and tied on a 4 foot mono leader.... within two minutes I was catching them too.

I learned A LOT on this trip....
