Big Water = Big Fish

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Big Water = Big Fish

Post by Matt Massey »

Spent the last 4 days pounding the Ottawa River on an annual fishing trip with friends.

I found out quickly that spinnerbaits were not producing very well. Switching to twitch baits made a big difference. Five Northerns were caught in double digits and another 3 big fish were lost at the side of the boat.

Baits that produced most consistently were a Green and Yellow Sluggo and an Bass Assassin Albino Twitch Shad.

The biggest came on Saturday morning off of a huge beaver dam with deep trenches in a small bay off the Ottawa River - we needed to push over a secondary dam to access the bay.

I was relying on a Kistler 7'0" Helium LTA XHC paired with a Shimano MG 51 Reel. The total weight of the rod and reel is roughly 12 oz which is the only way I could throw the sluggo and twitch shad four days straight.

Here she is - 18lbs 10 ounces of pure Ottawa River Northern Pike.

Westmeath Fish

Post by Matt Massey »

Thanks

Beachburger - that is a Westmeath fish and there are more out there for sure. I missed another big hen on Sunday morning while jigging. She would have been over 12lbs but stretch the thin wire hook on the jig and got off. There are more big girls out there but I would say they will go deep soon.

Sweet pike...I am trying this year to top my PB out of the Ottawa...38". Most of my trout time will be used up for this task, but I hope it happens quick cause I can not take missing out on a good troutin trip
