Too Much Prop

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Too Much Prop

Post by Seabass81 »

Well with my nitro I find I am spending alot of time looking at the sky while taking off. There is a 5 second lag where my rpm's stay the same before the nose finnaly drops.

I am running a 75 hp tracker on a nitro 170 dc. When I bought the boat I was told she was slow to get on plane. The prop that came with it was a trophy 4 blade ss 23p.

What kinda prop are you running on your 75? I am thinking of dropping to a 3 blade 13x19.. Think it will do?

Oh and the prop will be for sale next week so if interested let me know

I'm going to have to agree....though I've never run a set I sure know of people who have....with great success. Mostly people, like yourself, that have boats that are slightly underpowered.

Second option is those fins that attach to the cavatation plate. They're cheaper but the tabs are definately the better option in my opinion. I ran one on a previous boat and it got me up on plane in a jiff.

You're on the right track with a 4 blade prop though but you seem to be too high in pitch. Dropping down to a 19p or 21p 4 blade just might be the ticket....not sure you need to go SS with that engine. What are your rpm's at WOT?

Adjusting the trim as you take off might help... maybe. It helped on my old ski boat anyway, no idea how it would work on a Nitro though.

If your willing to spend 10 bucks go to www.canadapropeller.com and they will tell you what you need based on your boat, engine, gear that you typically carry and typical use. I used them last week, if I buy from them I'll get my 10 bucks back.

What's your rpm at WOT? That would help determine how much pitch to drop down.

Wish I had that site a week ago! Good news is it gave me the same info as before. Anyone have any experience with the composite props?

Before I answer your question like the tubeinator asked whats WOT rpm and what is your engine heigth.

I don't like foils nor tabs as they just mask a poorly set-up boat.

I'm afraid you are wrong on the tabs part ...
There's no power boat that would not benefit with tabs installed :)

This isn't just about the taking off and time to plane is it? Does this translate to overall fuel economy and performance?

Time till plane is basically irrelevant... why do you care? If you're looking at the sky then you're motor isn't trimmed properly. Trimming adjstments while you're taking off are a good way to speed up the time till plane... if you're really that impatient, but it does save gas if trimmed correctly. Overall fuel economy is more important than time till plane unless you're in a race. Are you? With other boaters?
