BIG Musky .. downtown Richmond

I heard there were musky in the river, I thought... yah..... likely much closer tot he rideau... near Prince of whales ... well today I was walking up McBean and crossing the bridge .. of course like any REAL fisherman... my eyes were drawn tot he river, and what did I see in about 12" of water????

A musky I would estimate to be ~30" long!!!!!!!! just laying there in the sun catching some rays!

I was shocked.. and this is above the little dam ... so there are MUSKY in dem dere waters.

Hmmmm. From that distance, any chance it could be a carp?

i lived in the Richmond area when i was a kid and we fished that river all the time....it was full of fish back in the day, including muskie and yes right from the bridge. lots of walleye back then too.

That was definitely a LOG, there are NO fish anywhere near Richmond - especially Musky and Walleye...

likely been fishing longer (2X) than a lot of you are old

so I know my fish when I see one.... big difference btwn a carp and a musky ... I have caught many in the 20-30 pound range (pike) so I know my gators when I see one.... so please

I know that there are fish in and around Richmond... just not as many as there used to be I guess.

My son caught a 2lb SMB last year right from the park in town... he told me he caught a musky as well last year by the bridge just off Eagleson.....

I didnt expect to see a musky though especially above the dam in town

Sometimes things left unspoken never get dealt with either.......Many people know of this spot. I do not even fish there and I know of this spot.

How about we get back to the basics with this site and help people learn to fish, what to use, where to try ( of course if you want to mention your honey hole that is up to you ) and overall educate and encourage our youth to fish and do it legally. I am getting tired of people jumping in and lambasting ( no fatty luke guy I did not say lamb chops ) others for mentioning locations etc. We all can access google maps, the World wide web and we all I hope can read map books etc that have been published. The info I am afraid is already out there. Did OOD not do a huge article on a lot of these spots in the City area people keep trying to keep a secret. So again, I think part of the problem with this site lately is people do not want to share anything anymore due to the ripping people get for doing so. Get off the site if you do not want to get back to the core of it.

You know what else..people keep saying that when you post something you will notice an increase in traffic on your location...Well I am sure fish-hawk is not so popular that everyone sits waiting for someone to mention thier spot...How about we look at the fact that the over pressure could be from an increase in anglers due to an increase in population..We always hear that it is the talk on here that is causing it and it is not like it was back in the day. 20 other sites I have found about fishing in Ontario....Our population since my dad's days have increased by 4x..so I wonder if this increase in population has any effect on the pressure we see these days??? HHmmmm..something to think about.

Well said Mr Almonte!

Although sometimes I'm not sure if it is a case of "giving away my secret spot" as it is "I know something you don't".

A few years ago on this site two guys stumbled onto one of the heaviest fished trout rivers in North America on a slow day. They had some good fishing and filed a report about discovering some secret trout shangi-la and everything was hush-hush nope can't tell you the place. Now this river (the Ausable in upstate NY) has had books written about it and featured in upteen magazines for decades......perhaps the biggest selling fishing book of all times did a whole chapter on it.

I found the whole nonsense laughable and a bit ridiculous and since the river is only a few hours from the border anyone who didn't know about it.....should! So I gave up the rivers name. Well you can imagine the fallout. I took quite a shellacking.

Well this is my first post or reply as it were. I must firmly aggree with Almontefisher on this matter for I myself am an angler from 19 years ago when I was growing up I was out all the time with my father and then things changed drastically and i havent touched a rod in that long now last year I bought a little 14' foot with a 6.5 johnson and want to pick it up again i have the time and the passion but do you think i know or rememeber a damn thing no I havent a clue but here i thought would be the perfect place to ask for help but for the past few months i dare not after reading some of the posts latley damn im to affraid of being laughed off the site. Sorry for the no grammer and possible spelling typos.

no one is really initiated until they're thrown in the FH baptismal (shark) pool and "shellacked". i think the term i used to describe my own initiation was "crucifixion". you come out tougher, is all.

cool that you saw a musky just hanging in the shallows and could get a nice look at it. that's neat.

Personally I am not one to post fishing spots in an open forum unless the location:
a) is already well know or experiences significant fishing pressure,
OR
b) is a publicly accessible park, etc.

I do have a number of spots that are not well known (thought not necessarily honey holes) that afford some quiet fishing away from the "popular" spots. That being said, depending on the person I don't have a problem PMing location details, etc.

In some cases, questions like "Where can I catch trout around Calabogie?" are simply answered with a reply to check out the publicly available stocking lists, which have been posted on FH numerous times. Given that the majority of anglers fishing up the valley tend to keep their catch, I won't indicate which lakes are fishing better than others as this info tends to lead to the lake being fished out for the season.

When it comes to trout fishing I have no problems publicly directing people to a region, however providing an "X marks the spot" location isn't going to happen. Part of fishing is exploring new waters, etc.
