Does this happen often???

I was out fishing Lake Z tonight........

I hooked into a brown bullhead using a crankbait!

Mouth hooked too! It hit it like a freight train! Not a big bully but a good size for that lake....

Now I recall reading a past post where someone got one on a Big-O.

Is this more common than I think? (My fishing partner found it strange too!)

I caught it during daylight and in an area filled with pike.

I have little experience fishing any sort of cat. In fact last time I caught a bully was in 1997! Using worms, at night in the rice beds on the Mississippi...

Caught one on a 4" slim minnow once, that was a suprise.
Had 5" and a 7" bullhead in my fish tank as a kid, the big one ate the rock bass I added a month later and the small one tried to eat one half its size

it got stuck in its mouth and that was the end of the small one.
So Id say you have a chance of catching one on a minnow style bait.

I never knew bullhead were that agressive.

I knew channel cats were. I caught enough of them on Mepps spinners and Rebel Humpback Minnows bass fishing the Susquehanna River as a kid.

yep..couple of years ago I was fishing at Kingston-Mills off the rocks next to the falls and watched a bullhead come up to the surface and hit my white Big-O like there was no tomorrow.

I know this will sound like a "fish tale", but it really happened. A couple of years ago my buddy and I were trolling for Musky on the South Nation at Wendover dragging 10" Believers behind the boat. He yells out "fish-on" but he thinks it's kind of small. He reels up only to find a catfish, very close in size to the one pictured in this thread, has nailed his Believer...and here's the kicker, the catfish had a Big-O already in it's yap that someone else had broken off previously. My buddy still has that Big-O sitting in a cup-holder in his boat and everytime I fish with him I'm reminded of that 12 inch fish trying to eat a 10 inch bait.

Guess its just the fact that I do not target cats and also that its been 12 years since I last caught one....

Funny how in 12 years of fishing I had never snagged one.....

Yes it was VERY aggressive in how it hit and fought!

i got one a couple weeks ago on a jitterbug man was i surprised iv also caught them one meps and spinnerbaits agresive fish they are

yeah they smelll really bad at this time of the year, just like pike...

i think you are on to something..!!!

all jokes aside. james that spot i gave up for sturgeon also holds a crap load of these brownies early in the year.

you can catch just about anything using just about anything. i've personally seen carp caught on bass poppers and a musky caught on worms under a bobber.

There are exceptions though.. Wont see to many suckers chasing down a believer.

My point is that in 12 years since the last one I caught I was really surprised to pull one out of the water on a crank...........

Yes I did manage one pike and the fishing was tough that night. Not much biting. Nor much surface action.

Not sure why there is guffaw on this? If people have done it, that's awsome. I have not, was just curious to see how often a bottom feeder has aggresivly hit a crankbait, spinner, whatever.....

Seems some have been lucky enough to experience it. Thanks to those who have responded they have.
