Charleston Lake on Saturday

To get to Charleston, take the 401 east to the Lansdowne exit ( 6-7 miles past Gananoque). Head north through the village of Lansdowne and continue on to the Outlet (about 10 miles). When you get to the Outlet, there is a good ramp/dock courtesy of the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority. Parking for about 20-25 rigs.

Jigs

Jigging is a great way to fish for Charleston Lakers as long as the wind is not too strong. I've had great success using white tube jigs with a 3/4 once jighead. Try off island drop-offs and any of the numerous shoals that drop into deep water. Spoons like Mr. Champ with small minnows also work well.

There were a few people jigging on the weekend. My buddy that I was out with never fished trout before so his boat is not set up for trolling. I started the day trolling with leadcore line and after some problems with my dad's 40 year old reel, I switched to my clamp on downrigger. My buddy trolled all day using some type of "pink lady" driver he was easily hitting bottom in 50 plus feet of water.

I picked up a new Penn 309 reel tonight some once I spool her up I'll be ready for some more leadcore fishing. I like using the leadcore so I can jerk the rod every now and then to get the lure more action.

Just get some pink ladies, heavy weight and some spoons and give it a go.

JimW/Jigs, pink ladies work great, but dipsy divers are even better. You can control your depth, get the bait down with less line and it pulls the lure out from the boat. It has 3 settings so you can run it close to the boat or farther out. Once you learn to use them, they'll be with you ever trip.

Thanks all for the helpful advice. We have only used wire line when trout fishing, and I didn't like it........way too much line out. Snagging bottom and other folks. Things got pretty tense a few times (we were snagged too. Being a calm cool person, not given to rants, we just cut their line and kept trollin. )

So, will break out the stiff rod and give the jiggin a go. Have a few lures such as a BIG Mr. Champ, and some buzz bombs..........who knows?? It was recommended that these lures be tipped with small minnows. Sounds logical.

That's the set up we use through the ice. can't see why it wouldn't work now.

I was using a fish seeker and Jim w was using a down rigger, the fish seeker lets you go down 50 feet with only 100 feet of line, actually you can control the depth by changing the line postions on this thing worked real well as far as I could tell. I was using power pro for the main line and flourocarbon as a leader with spoon attached. Seem to be quite acurrqate in the depth also. They would be a pain to use if you needed to vary the depht all the time.
