Sturgeon Question

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Sturgeon Question

Post by GuinnessGuy »

HI

I hold a Quebec non-resident license AND an Ontario Sportsman license.

The Ontario Regs say that I have a limit of ZERO sturgeon on the big O, and the Quebec Regs say that I can keep ONE.

Does it come down to where I launch the boat from? If I want to keep one?

I'd like to catch and keep one, to finally taste the meat. I live 2 minutes away from Petrie, and I would hate to have to launch at McLauren's Bay, just so I could keep one.

What's your opinion on this?

There's an East European deli at 1160 Baxter Road that sells smoked sturgeon. I say that if you just want to find out what they taste like, go there and buy some.
Lake sturgeon aren't doing too well in Ontario, hence the zero keep rule. Keeping one from a border water just 'cause you have a PQ license seems wrong to me. Also, it's not something you can fillet and roll in batter, so unless you have access to a smoker you're outta luck.

While you can fish under either license, you must adhere to the catch/posession limits that you're in.

So if you put in on the Quebec side you are legally allowed to keep one sturgeon. Now this is where it gets interesting...when you enter Ontario you must now adhere to MNR's catch/posession limits. Since the catch/posession limit for sturgeon is 0 for both Zone 12 and Zone 18, you can't have a sturgeon in your posession.

So in a nutshell, it doesn't matter which side you put in on, in the end it will still be illegal for your to bring it home.

Katch Moore,

Here's the quote from the MNR Regs:
Limits in Boundary Waters
Anglers who fish in waters that lie both in Ontario and another province or state must include the total number of fish caught anywhere in those waters as part of the number caught and kept or possessed under the Ontario recreational fishing regulations when bringing those fish into Ontario.
In the case of sturgeon it is pretty clear since the posession limit is zero.

Bringing lake trout or bass back to Ontario from Quebec (when out of season in Ontario) is a grey area. I'll have to fire off a question to my MNR contact. If you're stopped by an Ontario CO with OOS bass or Lake trout in your vehicle how is he supposed to know that they were caught in legally in Quebec?

PLEASE, just buy some...
If the the limit is 0 there is good reason for it, I wish they took this step 10 years ago. I'm still puzzled why commercial fishing is allowed.

I've fired off an email to my MNR contact. I'll post the response when I get it.

Ewww!

Why would you want to keep one? Buy one..please!
Any sizeable one will be of a good age and has sat in those pollutants and toxins for years...I would advise NOT eating it.

As it can take up to 30 years for a sturgeon to reach sexual maturity and how they are dwindling worldwide, Please consider C&R?

Beluga Caviar used to get HANDED out on flights in the 60's (so my Mom and Uncle tell me) now the stuff is sooooo expensive due to dwindling sturgeon.

I'd hate to see them become an endangered species....or worse extinct!

I called Lapointe's for you too on this.

The guy mentioned that even commercial availability of sturgeon is rare and when and if they get it it is expensive.....

IMO, knowing that, I am even tempted to NOT fish them (and I am 100% C&R unless its walleye!)

again...i will say.commercial fishing on the ottawa river for sturgeons should be stop.

we should make a petition for this.

the worst thing the people that as those commercial permit here in are region sale those sturegoens to those smoke house here,,so the sturgeons you will buy..have a good chance to come frome the ottawa river.

so they are allowed to fish are river and catch those sturgeons by crate load and sell it to us..because we are not aloowed to get them becasue the species is going out ......

way to go on this for the qc mnr.... :? .

but again..very tasty fish.

love it.
actualy i will get some today.chelsey smoke house. :P .
you can get that chelsey smoke house fish at the fish store like..lapointe in hull shoping center or on the ottawa market

Folks the first part of the quote is specific to border waters, like the ottawa river essentialy if you are on the ontario side fishing and you had caught a sturgeon earlier on the quebec side and kept it wich was legal until you entered the Ontario side and started fishing.

The second part the lake trout and bass can be explained below: As far as driving somewhere to fish and then returning and getting stopped it will be up to you to inform the individual stopping you where you caught the fish. I could have been in north western ontairo in june and caught and kept 2 small mouth and i am driving home to ottawa and get stopped and road check. I am legally in possession of those fish even though the season might be closed in the ottawa area.

i am not hser in all that thing about crossing and cant have a fish.

actualy i can guive fish to people that dont have permits..so what if they get stop..they dont have even a permit..but its legal for me to guive it to them.

even in the same region..like here i can be fishing in zone 10 and 25 in the same 5min period...but there some size limit deference in both zone..but i am in akayak and can fish both zone in the lenght off 10 feet..gatineau river and ottawa river they join..but 2 deferent zone..

suposely the same for trasnpost live bait accross ontario to quebec etc.

i am not sher but some off those law are a bit..
