FISHING THE MADAWASKA RIVER FROM CALABOGIE LAKE TO BURNSTOWN

HEY ALL FH'ERS

i will be fishing the madawaska river this weekend from calabogie lake to burnstown i have never fished there before and was wondering what type of obstacles are in that part of the river and how the fishing is? I would be grateful for any tips and help you can recommend !! I am fishing from a canoe!

Assuming you're launching out of Burnstown beach, if you head to the left from the launch, across the far side, there is a hidden shoal that comes up from 70ft to 2ft, watch for it.
If you head to the right towards Calabogie, try around the bridge pillings, decent success there in the past.
I've never had much luck in this stretch due to the steep grade of the water (2ft deep 1ft from shore, 30ft deep, 2 ft from shore, 50 ft deep 3ft from shore, etc).
I believe you can go as far as rapids towards calabogie, but thats it.

I've mainly caught smallies and pike in this stretch, with the occasional dink walleye thrown in.
I've marked tons of suspended fish right above the stewartsville dam, but have never enticed one to bite. I've always wondered what sits suspended in 100ft+ feet of water in 160 feet depths. I assume Sturgeon....

well i was thinking of launching at calabogie lake floating towards burnstown!!

There is a dam at each end of Calabogie lake which will not give you access to the river.

In the river there is excellent Muskie, Walleye and bass opportinity.

Many small bays and nooks have lilly pads and support good size largies on frogs and plastics.
Smallies can be found by downed trees at the shore over deep water and old bridge pilings. Lots of bolders on bays that have produced as well.

Muskie are everywhere. I have caught them in back bays and off deep water breaks.

Walleye are located by the rapids and edies in good numbers.

thanks jp i wasn't aware about the dams on the lake as i have never fished there before so is there any access to that river i have a canoe so its easy to launch anywhere,,,,,,or do i stay on calabogie lake and fish there?

The River has a swift current but you can lanch at the rapids just down from Calabogie and at the public facility at the Madawaska park. Can't miss it there is signs everywhere for it.

Calabogie there is apublic launch that is easy to put in and great largie fishing in the bay at the lanch. Be carefull as the weather can change quickly on the lake and it is not uncommon to get 3-4ft waves blow up in a matter of minutes.

Did you fishing that river and how is the bite????

Smallie bite was good, Largie bite was on fire.

Lots of Muskie follows and a couple of decent pike.

Didn't target Walleye.
