Uni knot

I'm following the uni to uni instructions that came with the power pro but the two ends never meet in the middle before locking. What am I doing wrong?

you should be able to just pull and they will come together!

Tighten the knots before pulling them together... that's perhaps where you're going wrong.

Don't forget to wet the line even power pro can burn under friction.

Missed the "wet line" part. It's working now. Thanks for the help.

Do you guys tie the superlines directly to the spool or backfill with a bit of mono?

I always back fill with some mono. Some guys use tape to hold it in place, I have never tried that but it sounds like a good idea. The first time I filled a spool with fireline, I just put it straight on the spool. Couldn't figure out why I was having problems reeling in any fish I hooked. Then the light came on, I think my friends still laugh at that one.

My experience has been that if you don't backfill with mono, your line will slip around the spool and you'll get no drag.

Although I suppose this could be remedied by taping the line to the spool. I do both.

I use mono backing....

on most of my reels I rarely put more than 75 yards of Power Pro on them...I put enough mono on to fill about 1/3 of the spool..then fill it with PP....how many times do you ever end up with over 75 yards of line out?...

RJ: I sometimes like to troll with the ultralight and have over 100 yards of line out. Even a hammerhandle feels like that monster in your pic that far out. Never felt real confident with the knot on the spool though. I think I'll try a bit of mono backing this time (now that I got this uni - uni working).

Having lost my one and only gang troll at Muskrat (yes, I was actually going to try trolling), I can appreciate the woes of a solid joining knot.

I chose the classic 'granny' to join the power pro to the mono, being as I'm not well known for my knots. (As Lucannus once told me, "If you can't tie knots, tie lots").

So, you can imagine my dismay as I let out about a hundred feet of line, then confidently turned to drive the boat. Seconds later I look back to see that my spool is letting out line (drag set to loose), and I'm already down to the mono. I start to real her back in, thinking, "wow, this is coming in easy".

Ask Bacon (who was the guest in my boat at the time), I nearly threw myself overboard when I realized my brand new gang troll and 200 feet of power pro were resting comfortably at the bottom of Muskrat Lake.

Should have used the Uni-Knot.

I use the uni to uni in the spring and fall on Bay of Quinte. 20lb Fireline to 12lb Vanish and I have never had a problem. We have caught Walleye up to 16 + lbs with no knot problems. took a while to get the confidence in it though!
