The guy in the yellow Canoe on Dog Lake...
yes i know its not right to blow by the guy in the canoe but im not going to do it because i want to flip him its not like im going arround the lake hunting for kayaks to flip, if im going to move away from you well then i shouldnt have to slow down, how far do you think one should be to not have to slow down when they pass you? 75 meters?
Last thing I am going to say....
"Survival of the Fittest" was an IGNORANT comment. PERIOD.
Lecturing a 16 year old on speed, power etc is FRUITLESS. We were all 16.
At some point.
I think the point people were trying to make (and why people feel the need to insult others in there replies) is that you will not make friends with that kind of attitude.
Almonte, Joco etc. I agree with you. Not a day goes by where I need to explain things to my children. Even at their young age it is never to early to instill good behaviour and manners.
Look, we are all different people on the web than in person. Unlike some I don't breed a hatred or dislike for somebody based on an opinion or position they have on something. Nor do I harbor a personal dislike when someone says something against me. Trust me it doesn't affect me in the slightest.
JWhite and Almontefisher have 2 different viewpoints on this matter and I can respect both.
But I do wish people would GROW up on this site, mature and realize its an opinion based site. If your going to get bent out of shape over someones position then perhaps this is not the site for you.

It happens to all of us to express ourselves in a particular way, even posting stuff that we tought would be of interest or relax the atmosphere of the Forum.

I would suppose that the distance thing would depend on the body of water that you're on. Large lake/wide river vs a smaller lake or narrow river? From my limited experience as a canoeist, I find that if you're 75-100meters away, the action of your wake would certainly be less then if you were 10-20 meters away.
And so what we all need to do is to *trust* that you'll use your better judgment based on where you are. It's not a bad idea though, if you have some doubts, don't take the chance, maybe the guy in the canoe just finished riding out the wake from another boater.
Guaranteed that, _if you do_ decide to exercise a bit of extra caution, if for no other reason than to extend a courtesy to your fellow boaters, it'll be *well received and appreciated*, especially from old farts such as myself.

I'll now sign off from this thread, and wish everyone a terrific & safe summer, that includes you Carmine.
Thanks again to everyone, for your input, and tightlines!

Couldn't resist....... First off Jamers I take offence to your driving recklessly comment about the St.Lawrence accident. He is a friend of mine and is an experienced boater. In no way were they being reckless. The passengers job is to watch for traffic and rollers and they saw the initial roller but didn't see the second one which is what caused the accident. He is not in hospital either(makes your story better though right ?) but resting comfortably at home recovering and in good spirits.Bass boats are made to go fast so what is the issue ? Do you complain about fast cars and bikes on the road ? It is usually more a jealousy thing than a safety issue. As far as the wake thing goes some of you guys have got to be kidding right .....Bass boat at 60 mph = NO WAKE come on now !!! As far as the canoes and kayaks go if you are going out on the river expect to run into waves if not stick to the back bays where it is safer. So unless you know the real story stick to what you know because yes he was going fast but by no means was he being reckless !
Let's try to keep it civil guys, otherwise it's just going to get locked down. The initial topic for this thread was on proper wake control.
Now, my take on Jamers's "reckless" comment is that it was a general comment with regards to individuals putting other boaters at risk (i.e. hight speed close passes, wakes, etc). Personally I was not of the impression that operator of the flipped bass boat was reckless, rather the vicitm of an accident that was speed related.
While it is perfectly legal to drive the speed (on the road) or all out on the water (when not posted), it is considered to be careless if your speed exceeds would be considered safe under the current conditions regardless of the posted speed. (i.e. highway driving in snow, etc).
Also the operation of a boat is no different than that of a car; the driver is solely responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle. A passenger cannot be held accountable for the action/inaction of the operator.

Id like to chime in on this one guys.
I spend most of my summer fishing and boating on Cranberry lake. It is part of the Rideau Canal system. My boat is more of a walleye or big lake fishing boat. So I slow down when I can to people in smaller boats and try to steer away from others that are fishing and such.
I have to say Id rather have a bass boat pass me while its on plane, then slow down and cause a large wave to crash into my boat.
Being on the Rideau I have more of a problem with the large cruzer boats.
Last summer my wife and I rescued a older man from a capzised lazer sail boat. He told us that a large cruser had caused his small boat to flip.
I think we should all show a little respect to those in smaller under powerd boats. we have all been there at one point or another! There is a speed limit to all boaters 30 meters or less from shore. I think its 10mph?

35 bass boats this weekend and then 85 the following weekend.....should be chaos out there.

j white...And Joco, settle down.....nobody is out there looking to swamp you and your kayak so put the 80lb Power Pro down before it gets you into serious trouble. Some people are less wise on the water...doesn't give you the right to try to damage their boat.
do you think i would damage anyboat .........
for the fun off it.jeeeeee.
i would trow a big lures and power pro to some people that come to close to me or others..dangerously and put us in danger..i would cast in front off the boat not myself if my line get caught in there prop...its there fault just have to go farther away frome us.
plu i am not realy talking about peope going fast..in some situation in the middle off the lake or river far frome all ho cares
sher but hwy say if you are a canoe or kayak and be in the middle off the lake..yes you should be ready to take some waves..its one rish off behing on the lakes and rivers part off the deal...but boaters that see those kayak and canoe can slow down ahead then past then go back to there speed.
or thiose guys going full speed in channel or under bridge small bridge and cant see whats the other side and take chance...and might kill somebody accross that bridge or in that channel.
NOPE.some people are great there some great smart boat drivers out there..some do slow down and are carefull..yes there some.
some other are so show off..or no that smart or just plain none responsible to act kindly to smaller boaters..those not cost nothing to be friendly to others..nothing at all.
so if some think there smart butt by doing stupib thing..i would not care to put a full spool on there lower end..i would not care at all.
so sayimng to me i would get me in serious troble so beat it..i can take it..if its wort it. no smart butt gone to bullys smallers boat on water becasue they have a bigger boat and cant be be civilize.
but like we saw here on the start off this tread..there some great people on water.and my 2 thumbs up for those. way up.
for the others show off.....no comment.
sorry ..for some bad words..but i do take this subject to heart..i cant stand bad people on water...and there so many off it..i see them everytime i am out almost lakes or rivers.
but a big thanks for the great ones.
