Reading the posts on Charleston Lake here has gotten me interested in Lake Trout fishing. Heck, I only live 15 minutes away and have spent many hours there fishing bass and pike and in the old days lakers through the ice.
Could someone help? What is best; wire, leadcore, downrigger or even jigging? What lures? I looked at a steel line outfit today in CT and wondered how the hell do I tie a knot in this stuff!
Anyone who can help it would be appreciated. I'd be glad to trade some info on some local bass hot spots.

The only lakers I've caught in Charleston have been while jigging for smallies. They will eat tubes.
When jigging you have to make sure you're directly over the fish- not an easy task without a good fishfinder, especially in the depths of Big Waters. That's probably why most people troll-a lot better odds of encountering fish.

When fishing with the father in-law its downriggers and sometimes jigging. If in my boat its a dipsy (1st part of the season and again at the end) or jigging. All on mono line.
Trolling lures of preferance have been Blue/silver Nasty Boys or Blue/silver Kwickfish 3-4", Blue Tazmanian Devils. Silver & Brass Woblers and some times just 1 of the colours.
Jigging is usually small Cleos and occationaly tube jigs.
A lot of time you'll see guys/gals using gang trolls with a minnow on the end. Personally I dislike all the extra weight.

I just came across a technique for mid depth trolling (50 ft) thats quite simple. Take a 6.5 or 7 feet bass casting outfit and spool it with 10 lbs line then attach a leadcore section of 3 or 4 colors then add a length of 8 lbs line to that then your spoon.....Interesting. Beats buying a steel line outfit or downrigger. Would likely use it a couple times before bass season.
Geez might be better off just buying a stateside license and doing some bass fishing...lol. I cannot wait for bass season!

what worked for me...
I got out for the June 5th Laker opener in Kingston... I was equiped with a Penn 209 as well as a 7ft heavy Shimano rod/ Abu 6500/ 30 lbs Fireline/ Gibbs weights (thanks WalleyeHunter) and a digital line counter.
The Gibbs weights worked really well. Work kinda like a snap weights system (offshore) only better. You set the Gibbs weight 20-30 feet ahead of the gang troll/spoon and when you have a strike, you set the hook and the weight slides down to the gang troll/ spoon. Sweet system. Picked them up at Voyager. Bought 2 and had change back from a $5.
Never did get a to try the Penn... I caught 6 that day and my partner caught 2. Great day....
