Simcoe Mishap on ice(pic)

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Hadn't thought that far....
What you really want is a Wilcraft http://www.thewilcraft.com/photos.php?type=Ice-Fishing

The videos of this demonstrate how effective it is. Kinda useless for anything else but still a neat idea.

I was out there on the 14th. It wasn't a car but a full sized pick-up. The best ice in the area was 8 1/2"-9" away from the shore. Near the shore line there it is usually poorer ice than further out. It was a young area guy who was not fishing just screwing around.  No other vehicles even considered going out. This happened not far from the boat launch in 6'-8' of water. On the 14th an ATV hauling a large boat trailer with a hut on it caused a large piece of ice to break free and be free floating only a few(10-20) feet from the spot the truck went through.

I saw that wilcraft on Ken Hrbek outdoors, man what an awsome ice fishing machine that is!!!! your right it wouldn't really be practical other then ice fishing, but they were saying that rescue departments have taken interest in it, thinking about using it for ice rescues! I'd buy one if I had the money, you can fish in a hut on half an inch of ice. apparently it weighs less per square foot then a person walking!!

I used to own an 8x8 Argo with Super tracks (18" wide IIRC). It would go just about anywhere.

BUT...............

When I bogged it in about 18 inches of slush, it was ugly............

If you are running a wheeled Argo and you drop through the ice, you will probably NOT be able to get out forwards or backwards. It sits bow-low in the water and so you would think that the rear tires should be able to pull you up backwards. Not in my own experience......... But you are probably OK if just one side drops through, you can generally get enough purchase with the opposite wheels to back you out.

Anyways, Argo makes a heck of a good machine, and like everything else in life has its good points and bad. You are not likely drown if your Argo goes through the ice. But you might die of hypothermia.........
