Are expensive Polarized Sunglasses Worth it?
Cheap sunglasses
The only place you want cheap sunglasses is at a ZZ Top concert.
I own a pair of Maui Jim Kahunas and they are 100% optically correct. They are not perscription.
I bought them in 2004 and in the space of a month, last fall (2009), I broke the frame and then cracked a lens. This was two separate incidents. I broke them, sent them in for repair, broke them again and sent them in again.
I both cases Maui Jim replaced, first the frame and then both lenses, as good will waranty(i.e. gratis, free of charge). Each incident cost me about $23 in shipping so for $46 I have brand new $300 sunglasses and that was after 5 years of wearing them. Oh, did I mention that they also gave me a brand new clam shell case for free. Also worth mentioning is that the turn around from the time I sent them in until I received them back was about 10 days.
So not only are they great sunglasses but the customer service is almost unbelieveable.

no doubt Maui Jim's are the best in polarized glasses. I have owned 3 pairs of them.. including the big kahuna's...
Last season I bought a pair of solar-bats... for $110 or something around there... There is a difference... no doubt.... There is not a 3x the price difference for me...
I lost the MJ's wading when fly-fishing... ouch. that was a bad day...
I lost the solar bats over the side when flying long in the boat.... that was a bad day too...
I need a new pair this season... un-sure what I will get... part of me loves having the best-of-the-best knowing i'm not missing out on anything... the other part of me doesn't want to throw $200 away for only very minimal improvement....
Tough call for sure

I was lucky enough to spend my summer on Lake of the Woods, and I can honestly attribute about half the muskies I caught to a good ($$) pair of polarized shades. I've owned all kinds of cheap pairs and while you can certainly get by with these, no one wants to just get by when theyre out fishing!
Rudy Optical is not that well known in Canada but they make some of the nicest polarized shades I've run into. www.e-rudy.com
Goodluck!

yes they might be a bit better but not as mutch as the $$ deference
but this is a personal choice...if in there head they think so..go for it..hahaha waste your $$ on them.

sunglasses
I have a pair of Solar Bats and wouldn't be caught fishing without them. This line of glasses was brought on by Dr. Nesty who studied the field of ocular physiology, making him very knowledgeable in the field of eye protection against the suns rays. Check his website, pretty interesting and glasses for all outdoor activities.

Guys....
If you want the quality for little $$$$
CHECK THE CLASSIFIEDS!!!
I bought some Oakleys for $40......
Now before you say....fake, fake
A friend of mine is an OAKLEY fanatic and they checked em over with a fine tooth comb as they have the same pair and bought them from an Oakley retailer......
Exact in EVERY regard and the polarization is AMAZING....
SO a $300 pair of shades for $40....
Shop smart guys!

I have 2 pairs of prescription polarized glasses with different tints. I prefer one pair on cloudy days and the other pair on sunny days. And yes they absolutely make a difference. I've had guys in my boat that do not have quality glasses and have said "check that out" only to hear "what" more times than I can count. I usually reply with "you can't see that, right there!!!"
The only problem is what RJ said.....I can't go 10 minutes outside without them on without getting a headache.

dont say you dont pay for the name bud.......you DOOOOOOO
they might be a better quality but it sher is not for the amonth off $ your paying.......
this is like anything hesle...everything you pay for the name.
wathver it is.....why can you get the same exact thing made in the same manufacturer but becasue its under a onother hame you dont pay the same..and this happen wit a load off product.
clothing..sunglacee eltronic etc etc etc.
there is a lot off B.S in this.
i gues you shop at the shoping channel on the sunday night then..
.full off great product there..
like i said before......yes they are better but a 25$ and a 250$ nobody will say there like 25 time better...
waste off $$ big time.
but again its a personal choice
but like one did say.buy smart........that the best i saw in this tread yet. at least you did not got..$%$$ by the company..

I agree joco...you do pay for the name...hence Presidents choice has the No Name section at cheaper costs because they do not need to pay for an over inflated price due to promotional costs of a name ie trade branding, registering etc. Canadian Tire as well. A lot of thier brands are the same as brand names but under thier own names and so cheaper. Now on Steve's side quality is also reduced with these but on most products not by much.
the prob is the advertising cost they have...ex
adidas or nikes..they pay the high figur people in sports big money so they have to get the $$ frome somewhere so they boost there product price.
and this is in all big company.
but those it mean they have better product........nope.
they do can have a bit better quality sometime sher not for what they charge for it sadly.
even in lures we can see this..same lure under a deferent name is sheaper.
ho well all this to say.
those glaces are a great tool to have.
even moe wen you are sight fishing or even wen you flips..cool to see them going for the lures.

Jocco,
Your point is well taken, but possibly a bit over-stated. Yes, name brands do cost more and for some of the reasons you listed. But NIKE didn't become as big as they are just by advertising. They have quality products as do many of the higher-priced things in life.
Should you pay 5x the cost for 1.5x the value. IMO no.
Some brands are simply better than others... and in my experience, very few things that are inexpensive are quality... Cheap = Cheap 9 of 10 times. I know I buy name brands, after researching, because I want the quality and do not want the frustration of buying cheap stuff that doesn't perform/function.
Sunglasses are one of the many things that combine technology with fashion. When those two elements meet, prices soar almost unrealistically... Being able to look good is huge, doing it and having bragging rights about having the best-of-the-best is even better... so prices go way up...
I just wouldn't say that expensive name brands are practically the same as low-cost no-name brands.... In fact, I think the opposite. It's just price does not scale at the same rate as quality...

people just do a test..put a bran name on a product and put it for sale..and try again and put a no name on that same object and see..people go for the name pure and simple.
its the same in all product cars and sutch some off the most expensive car and sutch junk none reliable,,but man wen people sea you sit in one.it mean something you are somebody..such b.s again.
its the same for product..look at tools..same tool but under deferent name same exact toll same factory etc..but under a name at sears onother name at c.t or at home depot etc.
same exact tool.but big deference in the price off it.
